Jim Harbaugh’s honking heats up Seahawks, 49ers rivalry

Jim Harbaugh honked at the Seahawks team bus back in October. The Seahawks got their revenge on Sunday.

The suddenly budding rivalry between the San Francisco 49ers and the Seattle Seahawks, who took down the Niners, 42-13, on Sunday night to guarantee a playoff berth, extends far outside the stadium. At the very least, the rivalry stretches as far outside of it as the parking lot, according to Seahawks defensive backs Earl Thomas and Richard Sherman.

According to them, as related by Gregg Rosenthal at NFL.com, San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh honked and waved at the Seattle team bus after his team beat the Seahawks, 13-6, back in October. If that accomplished anything, it gave the Seahawks something to rally around.

It didn’t have any effect on the Seahawks’ play on Sunday, according to Sherman, but there was a bit of revenge he hoped for that Pete Carrol wouldn’t approve, considering the game was already a blowout in Seattle’s favor:

“I’m not gonna lie to you,” Sherman told Silver after the game when recalling Seattle’s final touchdown Sunday night. “I told Pete, ‘Let’s score and go for two.’ He said, ‘We have more class than that.’ ”

If the two teams meet each other in the playoffs and keep the 2012 rivalry going, the honking rights should be a big part of the media coverage. If it’s not, something has gone wrong!
