Adam Carriker restructures contract to remain with Redskins

Adam Carriker has restructured his contract with the Washington Redskins, allowing him to remain with the team for the 2013 season.

The Washington Redskins have managed to restructure the contract of defensive end Adam Carriker, according to Chuck Carroll on Twitter. The team needed to restructure his deal in order to get under the salary cap for 2013.

Carriker’s restructure is likely more in the realm of taking a pay cut as opposed to simply moving money around to different years, given that he is a backup coming off an injury.

Had Carriker been unwilling to restructure his contract, it’s a safe bet to suggest that he would have been released. There were rumors on Monday that Carriker was likely to be let go prior to the new league year, which begins at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, March 12.

Washington released cornerback DeAngelo Hall on Monday, needing to do so to save cap space. Hall had offered to restructure his contract, but perhaps the numbers weren’t to Washington’s satisfaction or they simply wanted to go another way, but Hall didn’t get the same treatment as Carriker.

Carriker played in just two games last season due to a torn quadriceps tendon in his right leg. He's 29 years old and still seems to have tread left on the tires if he is able to return healthy. He's likely remain the primary backup at defensive end, behind Jarvis Jenkins and Stephen Bowen.
