The Miami Dolphins have been the team to talk about when it comes to pending free agent wide receiver Mike Wallace. After all, the Dolphins need a receiver, have a boatload of salary cap space and the Pittsburgh Steelers are unlikely to be able to retain Wallace. But the market for receivers took a big turn on Monday, and as Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk notes, it has only benefited Wallace.

Whether it be the Miami Dolphins or the Minnesota Vikings, it’s looking like Mike Wallace could be costing whichever team that signs him about $13 million per season going forward.

In the post, Smith cites Jeff Darlington of the NFL Network, who says that the Dolphins believe the Minnesota Vikings will be involved in the Wallace sweepstakes. On top of that, the Dolphins apparently believe that the Vikings could take the bidding up in the range of approximately $13 million per season to get Wallace signed.
Those are huge numbers, but all it really takes is two teams to start a bidding war to help Wallace really cash in this offseason. He’s been looking for a big contract for some time now, and all this talk of big money is certainly deserved, given what he’s been able to do in the league thus far.

Minnesota is probably a new team in the Wallace race, given that the team traded Percy Harvin to the Seattle Seahawks less than 24 hours ago. Minnesota got a first-round pick in 2013 plus a mid-round pick in 2014 for Harvin, who has had issue after issue in the NFL. Harvin was going to hold out if he didn't get a new contract, or depending on what kind of mood he was in at the time, possibly didn't even want a new contract, but instead wanted to be traded.
Whether Monday was one of those days where Harvin wanted to be traded or not, the deal was done, and now the Vikings have essentially no weapons for quarterback Christian Ponder. That offense is essentially Adrian Peterson and then a ghost town. Of course, Peterson on his own will account for some wins any given season, but a guy like Wallace would definitely put the Vikings on top. The Dolphins clearly have competition here.
