NFL free agent tracker: Kevin Burnett signs with Oakland Raiders

Oakland made an effort to bolster by signing veteran linebacker Kevin Burnett.

The Oakland Raiders have agreed to terms with outside linebacker Kevin Burnett, according to NFL.com.

The ex-San Diego Charger and most recently Miami Dolphin was cut in order to make room for seemingly every high-priced free agent on the market, giving the Raiders a chance to scoop him up. Ironically, he will be filling the void left by Philip Wheeler, who left for Miami.

Last season, Burnett showed up in a big way, making 110 tackles to set a new career-high.

The 30-year-old has been improving steadily every year since 2008, his last with the Dallas Cowboys. Burnett's tackle totals have increased annually while his sack totals have been respectable for a 4-3 linebacker, registering anywhere from two to six sacks in that span.

Burnett comes into a major rebuilding situation and is certainly going to be leaned upon by second-year head coach Dennis Allen to help the youngsters along. The linebacking core is unsettled, with rumors flying that the troubled first-round pick Rolando McClain is going to be cut any day.

That release will give a clear picture of the new starting trio at linebacker: Burnett, Nick Roach and Miles Burris.

Burris is the best Oakland 'backer remaining on the team along with Burnett. As a rookie, Burris really flashed potential making 96 tackles and an interception. Roach comes over from the Chicago Bears, where he played inside in a 4-3 scheme, spelling Brian Urlacher much of last season.
