Bears sign Kelvin Hayden

The Chicago Bears have agreed to terms with cornerback Kelvin Hayden, bringing him back for 2013 on a one-year contract.

The Chicago Bears on Tuesday agreed to terms to re-sign cornerback Kelvin Hayden on a one-year contract, according to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune.

This is the second consecutive season that Hayden has signed a one-year contract with the Bears. His contract number for last season was $825,000. For a player who appeared in all 16 games, with two starts, that’s a solid figure.

Hayden was the team's nickel cornerback, which many teams consider a starter. Hayden played behind Charles Tillman and Tim Jennings and was an integral part of a defense that ranked among the best in the league, even during Chicago's late-season collapse that saw them miss the playoffs.

Hayden managed just one interception last season and has slowed down with age, nearing 30 years old. That said, Hayden has 48 career starts since joining the league in 2005 and should help maintain stability on a Bears team attempting to revamp the offensive side of the ball under new head coach Marc Trestman.
