NFL free agent news: Kevin Kolb pursued by Raiders, Bills; Brent Grimes signs

Quarterback Kevin Kolb is being pursued by the Oakland Raiders and Buffalo Bills, the latter of which is considered most likely to sign him.

The free agency period is winding down, but the active part of the NFL season will continue through April with the 2013 NFL Draft. After that though, it’s going to be an awful long wait until there’s more football news. But for now, there’s still plenty to talk about, even with most of the top free agents already signed to teams.

On Saturday, the quarterback talks heated up. Matt Flynn and Kevin Kolb are the top names available, the former via trade and the latter on the free agent market after being released by the Arizona Cardinals. Kolb can probably still start in the league, even if the Cardinals think Drew Stanton makes them a better team.

At any rate, let’s go with a rundown of what went down on Saturday in the NFL.

Bills close to nabbing Kolb

It was reported on Saturday that the Buffalo Bills were close to getting a deal done for the free agent quarterback. Kolb was showing some good things last season with the Cardinals before he went down with a rib injury. He actually led the Cardinals to a 4-0 start, which is often overlooked. It's unclear how much he will get with the Bills but he'd have to be the favorite for the starting role, and will likely be paid as such.

But if that doesn’t work out, Oakland could work

The Oakland Raiders are currently the top team in on the Flynn trade sweepstakes, but it was also reported on Saturday that they were interested in Kolb. Oakland has hurt themselves pretty badly in recent years by sending multiple high draft picks for players that never really ended up working out in the end. Signing Kolb might actually be a smarter option than trading for Flynn if his asking price is too high.

Grimes heads to Miami

The Miami Dolphins looked set at the cornerback position a couple years ago, but now they're in a spot where they desperately need some new players. They've already spent a bunch this free agency period, but on Saturday they put down even more money, bringing in former Atlanta Falcons cornerback Brent Grimes. He'll immediately be the team's top corner and is a great signing for the Fins.

Newman re-signs with Cincy

Cornerback Terence Newman may not have been the top name on the market, but there were a few teams reportedly interested in his services. And yet, despite a higher offer from the aforementioned Raiders, Newman elected to re-sign with the Cincinnati Bengals, to be with defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer.
