Antoine Winfield rumors: Redskins remain ‘strong option’ for cornerback

The Washington Redskins remain a “strong option” for free agent cornerback Antoine Winfield, according to one report. Washington would need to create some cap space to sign the veteran defensive back.

The Washington Redskins remain a "strong option" for free agent cornerback Antoine Winfield, according to John Keim of the Washington Examiner. Citing a source, Keim reports that the Redskins are one of four teams interested.

While one of the teams is unknown (Keim reports that it is a team that made the postseason last season, possibly the Denver Broncos), the other two are the Seattle Seahawks, who Winfield visited on Monday night, and the Minnesota Vikings, the team that released Winfield for salary cap reasons.

Winfield would certainly make sense for the Redskins, who are on the verge of taking their division by storm under quarterback Robert Griffin III. The team has some very serious salary cap constraints of its own, but has reportedly made it clear to Winfield that there are moves it can make the fit Winfield into the cap for 2013.

Any signing at this point would require some kind of maneuvering for the Redskins. In fact, there is still probably some maneuvering to do even without signing Winfield, as the team put itself slightly over the cap with the signing of DeAngelo Hall.

Hall and Josh Wilson are the starting corners at this point. If Winfield came in, he'd likely be the nickel corner, but he'd probably still see the field and awful lot and be considered a starter. It will be interesting to see where he ends up, as all of the teams currently interested in him don't have huge needs in the secondary, save for his old team, the Vikings.
