Aaron Hernandez trial: Probable cause hearing delayed until Aug. 22

Wednesday’s probable cause hearing was delayed as prosecutors continue to build a case against Hernandez.

Prosecutors in the Aaron Hernandez murder trial asked for a continuance as they continue to build a case against the former New England Patriots tight end in the shooting death of Odin Lloyd. The judge allowed the continuance, with the probable cause hearing on Wednesday being pushed back to Aug. 22.

It was expected that prosecutors could ask for the continuance as they wait for a murder indictment to be handed down by a grand jury. Hernandez is currently being held without bail, as are his alleged accomplices Ernest Wallace and Carlos Ortiz, for the murder of Lloyd on June 17.

Lloyd was shot five times, less than a mile from Hernandez’s home in North Attleborough, Mass. According to court documents, Ortiz told police that Hernandez, Lloyd, and Wallace got out of the car to urinate when he heard shots fired and only Hernandez and Wallace returned. He told police that Wallace said that Hernandez had shot Lloyd because he could not trust him anymore. Hernandez has pleaded not guilty.

Hernandez is also being investigated in a 2012 double homicide. John Connors, the lawyer for Ortiz, does not think that a trial will start for another “year and a half or two years.”
