The New England Patriots have cut defensive end Jermaine Cunningham, according to ProFootballTalk.
Jermaine Cunningham released by Patriots, per report
In the three years since the Patriots drafted Cunningham, things went downhill fast.
Cunningham was a second-round pick in the 2010 draft for the Patriots out of Florida, but he quickly fell out of favor in New England. He started 11 games as a rookie and finished with 27 tackles and one sack. But in 2011, he did not make a single start. He finished the season with one tackle.
Last season, he set a career high with 2 1/2 sacks, but he only made 16 tackles in 12 games. Cunningham has 60 career tackles and 3 1/2 sacks in three seasons with New England.
In November, he was suspended four games for violating the league’s performance-enhancing substance policy.
Cunningham was not the highest-profile former Gator the Patriots cut Saturday in an effort to get down to 53 men by 6 p.m. ET. Earlier in the day, it was reported the Patriots had cut Tim Tebow.
