Chris Kluwe released by Oakland Raiders

The Raiders won’t carry two punters after all. Chris Kluwe was released on Sunday.

The Oakland Raiders released punter Chris Kluwe on Sunday, the free agent confirmed via Twitter. The team will move forward with Marquette King at the position.

Kluwe previously spent eight seasons with the Minnesota Vikings. He gained fame outside of football circles for his outspoken personality and political activism. The Raiders signed him in the spring looking to replace longtime punter Shane Lechler, but he was outplayed by King in training camp and preseason.

King was signed as an undrafted free agent out of Fort Valley State in 2012, but spent his rookie year on injured reserve. The Raiders kept two punters on the roster following Saturday’s cut deadline, but it now looks like they’ll go with just one. King’s big leg and age (he turns 25 in October) gave him an advantage over Kluwe, who is now 31 and had declining numbers over the past few seasons. Given the Raiders’ offensive woes, King looks to get plenty of gametime experience in his second season.
