Raiders rumors: Tyler Wilson to be released, per report

The Raiders have given up on Tyler Wilson, waiving the fourth-round pick after a poor training camp.

The Oakland Raiders released rookie quarterback Tyler Wilson on Sunday, according to Pro Football Talk. The team selected him in the fourth round this spring but watched him struggle in a crowded competition throughout training camp and preseason.

For Wilson, this is a major fall from grace. The quarterback had first-round hype entering his senior year at the University of Arkansas, but his uneven performance contributed to a disappointing season for the Razorbacks.

The Raiders drafted him in the fourth round hoping to find a franchise quarterback at a discounted cost, but he struggled badly in training camp, falling behind undrafted rookie Matt McGloin on the depth chart. Wilson didn't even play in the final two preseason games.

The 24-year-old still boasts name recognition and pedigree, so he probably won't last long on waivers and it's still possible the Raiders try to stash him on the practice squad. For now, they'll go with Terrelle Pryor, Matt Flynn and McGloin on the roster. Pryor will be the Week 1 starter after outplaying Flynn in the preseason.
