NFL roster cuts: Steelers release RB Jonathan Dwyer, 21 others

In one of the more surprising cuts on Saturday, the Steelers waived Jonathan Dwyer despite a lack of depth at the running back position.

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced that they waived running back Jonathan Dwyer on Saturday among their 22 roster cuts to get to the 53-man roster.

The Steelers drafted Dwyer in the sixth round of the 2010 NFL Draft. Dwyer played 21 games with the team and split carries with Isaac Redman last season, rushing for 623 yards and two touchdowns on four yards per carry.

Dwyer's release comes as a mild surprise as he was expected to share time with Redman while rookie Le'Veon Bell recovers from a foot injury. Bell's recovery may be going better than expected, however, because the Steelers don't have much depth left at running back.

Redman should get the majority of carries until Bell is ready to play. La'Rod Stephens-Howling and Felix Jones are the other backs left on the depth chart after the Steelers cut the roster down to 53 players.

The complete list of Pittsburgh’s roster cuts are included below.

Jonathan Dwyer, Alameda Ta'amu, Terry Hawthorne, Justin Brown, Brian Moorman, Josh Victorian, Marshall McFadden, Jamie McCoy, Reggie Dunn, Mike Golic Jr., Joe Madsen, Chris Hubbard, Brian Arnfelt, Alan Baxter, Terence Garvin, Devin Smith Kashif Moore, Alvester Alexander, Nathan Overbay, Joe Long, Brian Rolle and Ross Ventrone.
