NFL roster cuts 2013: Bills release Thaddeus Lewis, 4 others

Quarterback Thaddeus Lewis was acquired via trade less than a week prior to being waived by the Bills.

The Buffalo Bills finished slimming their roster to 53 players on Saturday, announcing the release of five players after letting go of 18 others Friday.

Among the players released by the Bills on Saturday was quarterback Thaddeus Lewis, leaving the team with just two quarterbacks heading into their Week 1 game against the New England Patriots.

Veteran linebacker Bryan Scott, defensive ends Jamie Blatnick and Izaan Cross along with defensive tackle Torell Troup were all released Saturday as well.

Lewis was traded from the Detroit Lions to the Bills less than a week ago in exchange for linebacker Chris White. He completed 7-of-16 passes for 132 yards and a touchdown in his preseason debut, but it obviously wasn't enough. The Bills are left with only E.J. Manuel and Jeff Tuel as quarterbacks on their active roster.

Brian Galliford of SB Nation’s Bills blog Buffalo Rumblings wrote that the release of Blatnick was the most surprising move of Saturday.

Blatnick is the surprise release of the day, as he'd had a pretty strong showing this summer and played a ton on both defense and special teams in exhibition action. New defensive coordinator Mike Pettine kept veteran Jamaal Westerman - a player that's familiar with his system - over Blatnick as the Bills' eighth linebacker (a total that includes Mario Williams, by the way).

Of the five players released on Saturday, Scott is the only veteran not subject to waivers.
