NFL roster cuts 2013: Ravens release Tandon Doss, 7 others

Tandon Doss and Bobby Rainey were two of the eight players released by the Ravens on Saturday.

The Baltimore Ravens announced the release of eight players on Saturday. Those players included third-year wide receiver Tandon Doss and second-year running back Bobby Rainey as the team attempted to reach the 53-man roster limit.

The Ravens also released safety Omar Brown, tight end Billy Bajema, tight end Matt Furstenburg, defensive tackle Cody Larsen, offensive tackle Joe Unga and offensive lineman Antoine McClain.

Many believed that Doss, a fourth-round pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, would finally find a productive role in his third season with the Ravens. He accumulated just seven receptions for 123 yards and a touchdown after being held without a catch as a rookie, but the Ravens' roster moves were expected to give him more of an opportunity.

Rainey’s release was the most surprising to Victor Hensley of SB Nation’s Ravens blog, however.

It seems a little...odd that the Ravens would release Rainey. This leaves the Ravens with two running backs on the active roster, Ray Rice and Bernard Pierce. It would make sense that the Ravens would have more than just these two running backs on the roster, but it may be that they feel confident in their full backs. If the Ravens are confident enough in their full backs to run the ball, block, and sometimes receive the ball; it may have been unnecessary to keep three or more running backs.

Rainey ran for 89 yards and two touchdowns on 23 rushing attempts in the 2013 preseason.
