Ravens vs. Broncos: Peyton Manning tosses 7 touchdowns in Denver’s win over defending champs

Getting revenge on last year’s champs by putting up record-setting numbers in the season opener is sort of a good way to announce your championship contention. But before thinking about your fantasy team or whatever, let’s just take a second to think about how absolutely ridiculous of an outing it was:

First off: Yes, that was an NFL record for most touchdowns in a game:

It was Manning’s:

- third game with six passing touchdowns (first ever)

The Broncos were up 25 in the fourth quarter when this happened, so a touchdown turning into a touchback hardly mattered, but Danny Trevathan Made a boner here:

Pulled the ol’ DeSean Jackson Special. Whoops.

Look for this game-used, autographed Ozzie Newsome eardrum on eBay in the near future.

Terrell Suggs got a sack and did a dance. That much we know. But what ... what exactly is he pantomiming here?

Michele Tafoya called the injury a “right knee sprain” on the NBC telecast, noting that Jones walked slowly and gingerly back to the locker room after being looked at on the sideline. Jones’ knee appeared to bend back awkwardly as he was hit on the play

There is no word yet whether Jones will return to the game. If Jones misses significant playing time, it would be a big blow to an offense starved for pass catchers. Jones was off to a good start against the Broncos, catching three passes for 24 yards before leaving.

Ravens rookie Brynden Trawick has already been in trouble for some unseemly hitting, but at least that was against an opponent.

Jacoby Jones is not an opponent, so we’re clear.

NFL players getting frisked as they exit the locker room is totally normal. Officials just check for performance-enhancing substances of the topical variety, and with good reason. That said, this exchange as the Ravens returned to the field after a weather delay sure did look weird:

No word on whether the Ravens had to empty out their water bottles and open their purses for inspection.

The league informed both teams that officials were awaiting word from the NFL office in New York on how to proceed. The situation has been fluid, as the kickoff was initially moved back to 6:55 p.m. locally, then to 7:05 p.m. before the latest update.

The two teams met in the divisional round of the playoffs last season, a game that the Ravens won, 38-35 in overtime. That game was blow-for-blow, with the Ravens and Broncos both scoring 14 points in the first quarter and then a touchdown in each of the following until the overtime period, when the Ravens managed a field goal to win it.
