Aaron Hernandez ‘ambushed and executed’ victims, per district attorney

A Massachusetts district attorney alleges that Hernandez followed three men out of a Boston nightclub in July 2012 before shooting them at a stoplight, killing two and injuring one. Investigators detailed the double murder indictment against Hernandez during a Thursday morning press conference.

Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel L. Conley spoke at a press conference on Thursday morning, laying out the details of the indictment of former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez in the double murder of Daniel Abreu and Safiro Furtado.

Surveillance footage showed an SUV belonging to Hernandez, with him in the driver’s seat, left the night club around 1:30 a.m. on July 12, 2012. After that, Conley alleges that Hernandez pulled up alongside the BMW with Abreu and Furtado in it at a traffic light before firing from the driver’s seat of the SUV.

Conley stated that the police believe Hernandez fired multiple shots from a .38 caliber Smith and Wesson revolver, killing Abreu and Furtado while injuring another man. The district attorney says Abreu and Furtado “were ambushed and executed.”

The victims were not related to any gangs, per Conley.

“Our thoughts go out to the families here, it was a terrible tragedy ... it was a chance encounter,” said William Evans, the Boston Police Commissioner. “These were two young, innocent victims.”

Police began looking into Hernandez’s involvement in the killings shortly after arresting him for the suspected murder of Odin Lloyd in June 2013. Authorities found Hernandez’s vehicle in the garage of his cousin’s home, Tonya Singleton, in Bristol, and seized it as part of the investigation.

No motive has been given by investigators. Hernandez was also charged with three counts of armed assault with intent to murder. Singleton has been charged with criminal contempt of court.

Hernandez is already facing a murder charge in the death of Odin Lloyd, who was shot to death at North Attleboro, Massachusetts in June 2013.

Arraignments have not been scheduled but are expected to be “in the very near future,” per Conley. More than two-dozen witnesses were spoken to during the investigation. More than 80 artifacts were also presented in the investigation of the double murder.
