Eagles made a field goal with a tight end as their second emergency long snapper

The Philadelphia Eagles’ long snapping situation is an absolute mess right now against Washington. Regular long snapper Jon Dorenbos had been a rock at the position, but went out hurt, forcing tight end Brent Celek into duty. It didn’t go well.

Then Celek went down with a stinger and chaos ensued.

At first, it looked like linebacker Mychal Kendricks would be pressed into duty. But while he scrambled to get some practice snaps at the sideline, the Eagles opted to go for it on a fourth down. They ended up converting, and then faced another fourth down. By that point, long snapper roulette was playing out on Philly’s sideline. Tight end Trey Burton took a few reps and scrambled to put some gloves on. The Eagles didn’t look like they’d end up kicking, but couldn’t get a play off and took a timeout.

When they returned from the break, Burton indeed ended up snapping for a field goal kicked by teammate Caleb Sturgis.

The two are familiar with each other after playing college football together at Florida. Punter Donnie Jones wrangled in the high snap and set it down for Sturgis to boot through a 41-yarder, giving the Eagles a 22-21 lead. Just like they drew it up.
