The New York Rangers at least found the first goal and the last goal of the game against the Islanders. Unfortunately for them, the Islanders found the six goals in between to defeat the Rangers 6-1. Vinny Prospal got the scoring started at the 14:25 mark of the first period and that was the only goal of the game through the first twenty minutes.
Islanders Vs. Rangers: Islanders Roll Rangers 6-2
The Islanders started to find their scoring touch at the 3:25 mark of the second period. Blake Comeau scored off a rebound and then Radek Martinek scored 33 seconds later. The Islanders rested a bit before scoring two goals in a matter of 1:16 from Joe Joensuu and PA Parenteau. The Islanders finished the second period with a 4-1 lead. The Islanders then scored two more times in the third period, one goal from Matt Moulson and the other from Trevor Gillies, his second of the season. The final Rangers goal came with 14 seconds left in the game, from Brandon Prust.
The story of the game will be the Marion Gaborik boarding call early in the first period. Gaborik ended up hitting Islanders’ forward Franz Nielsen. Gaborik was given a two minute boarding call and another roughing call in the scrum that ensued but the league will most likely at least take another look at the hit.
The Islanders outshot the Rangers 33-27 in the game and Islanders goaltender Al Montoya made 25 saves in the win. Rangers starter Henrik Lundqvist was pulled after making 18 saves in the first two periods. Chad Johnson replaced Lundqvist at the start of the third and finished with nine saves.
The Rangers will travel to Philadelphia to take on the Flyers on Sunday afternoon while the Islanders will look to play spoiler again against the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night.
