Erat traded to Capitals for Forsberg

    Russell LaBounty-USA TODAY Sports

The Capitals announced shortly before the 3 p.m., ET trade deadline that the organization had completed a trade. However, they remained silent on any other details.

Erat is currently playing in the fifth-year of a seven-year, $31.5 million contract that carries an annual average value of $4.5 million against the salary cap. His contract contains a full no-movement clause, which means he waived the condition in order to join the Capitals.

    Gaborik traded to Columbus

    USA TODAY Sports

This ends a middling, somewhat controversial season for Gaborik, who’s scored nine goals and 10 assists and remained in head coach John Tortorella’s doghouse most of the way. Gaborik has one season left after this one on a five-year, $37.5 million contract. His cap hit is at $7.5 million. Gaborik has 333 career goals in 757 career games with Minnesota and New York.

Brassard was once a sixth-overall draft pick by Columbus in 2006, but hasn’t really turned into the top flight player you expect that high a pick to be, despite being a regular with the Blue Jackets. He has just 58 goals in 309 career NHL games, with his top season coming in 2010-11, when he scored 17 goals and 47 points in 74 games.

    Pominville traded to Wild

    Dave Sandford

Pominville was a No. 55 overall draft pick in 2001 and has spent his entire career with the Buffalo Sabres, making his NHL debut in 2003. The veteran winger instantly became a top producer for the Sabres, hand has topped 20 goals a season in six straight years and currently has 10 goals and 25 points in 37 games in 2013.

The 30-year old winger’s best season came in 2007-2008, putting up 27 goals and 80 points as he quickly became a strong leader for the Sabres and eventually was named the captain of the team. The Sabres have floundered the past few seasons, however, and this could be one of the first big moves made by Buffalo that could signal the start of the rebuild that GM Darcy Regier has hinted could be on its way.

    Penguins acquire Jokinen

    USA TODAY Sports

In exchange for Jokinen, Carolina will receive a conditional draft pick, according to Bob McKenzie of TSN. The Hurricanes are expected to retain a portion of his salary as part of the deal.

Jokinen is playing in the second year of a three-year, $9 million contract that carries an annual average value of $3 million against the salary cap. Carolina placed Jokinen on waivers last week in an attempt to get the 30-year-old forward off their books. However, no team placed a claim. Despite this, reports surfaced that rival clubs were interested in Jokinen, but were not interested in taking on his contract, especially with the salary cap dropping to $64.3 million next season.

    Could Devils deal first-round pick?

    USA TODAY Sports

One of the more obvious “where there’s smoke, there’s fire” hints that a trade is coming is a regular player not practicing. So let the aimless speculation begin over in New Jersey, where Marek Zidlicky is the only Devil regular not practicing in Newark, according to Bergen Record beat writer Tom Gulitti.

Zidlicky has played in every game this season for the Devils this season. The 36-year-old Czech defender has four goals and 15 points in 36 games, and plays the point on New Jersey’s top power play unit. There have been questions about his play in his own end though. Zidlicky, who doesn’t play much on the penalty kill, is a minus-8. Still, he could be valuable to a team with a need for an offensive defenseman.

Sharks acquire Scott Hannan from Predators

    USA TODAY Sports

Hannan is a shutdown defenseman who has never put up big numbers, and had just one assist with a minus-11 rating in 29 games. The Predators would supposedly be looking for a player like Hannan, but it’s possible this could be about giving the veteran who is struggling a change of scenery more than anything else.

Hannan’s best career season came in 2005-2006, with the Sharks, with six goals and 24 points in 79 games. Getting anything in return for Scott Hannan is a steal at this point, as he has tumbled down Nashville’s depth chart in recent weeks, supplanted by rookie Vic Bartley. If anything, this trade stands as a vindication of Bartley’s play and his chance to earn an NHL job coming out of training camp in the fall.

New York Islanders targeting Brandon Saad?

    USA TODAY Sports

With the NHL Trade Deadline day going just about as many expected, with little action to speak of after a flurry of trades on Tuesday, we now turn to teams shooting for the moon in crazy trade speculation.

Of course Islanders GM Garth Snow is interested; every single team across the NHL would love to add a talented, young center -- who can also play winger -- like Saad. Staples notes that such a trade would be a “long shot,” with Craig Custance of ESPN is stating that the Blackhawks won’t even consider trading the young forward -- which is the only logical response to such trade speculation.

    Kiprusoff to remain with Flames

    Dale MacMillan

While Kiprusoff’s contract no longer contains any type of no-movement protection, it was widely reported that he would opt not to report in the event of a trade. Kiprusoff and his wife recently had a child, which is believed to have complicated the situation further.

Kiprusoff is playing in the fifth year of a six-year, $35 million contract that carries an annual average value of $5.8 million. The contract was one of the first back-loaded deals, which will pay him only $1.5 million next season after paying him upwards of $5 million in the previous five years. His former head coach, Mike Keenan, recently stated that Kiprusoff negotiated this contract with the understanding that he was going to retire before the final year of the deal.

Maple Leafs targeting Kiprusoff, Luongo, but why?

    Frederick Breedon

Damien Cox of the Toronto Starfeels that Kiprusoff presents the only “sensible” option for the Maple Leafs, saying that Toronto could receive a motivated player while Luongo has apparently tried to block a trade to the Leafs in the past. Bob Mitchell, meanwhile, says that messing with team chemistry can be a dangerous game for a team in the middle of a playoff race.

It’s tough to understand exactly why the Leafs would be interested in either goaltender at this point in the season, and it’s even harder to understand why any team would be interested in Kiprosoff after how this season has gone for the veteran netminder.

    Bruins acquire Jagr

    USA TODAY Sports

In exchange for Jagr, the Stars will receive two prospects and a draft pick. Chris Johnston of Sportsnet reports that Jagr’s agent has informed him that a deal to the Bruins is close to being finalized.

Earlier on Tuesday, Heika reported that Stars general manager Joe Nieuwendyk was unable to come to terms on an extension with Jagr. With the 41-year-old forward set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer, Nieuwendyk decided that it would be in the franchise’s best interests to receive some compensation for Jagr instead of letting him walk for free.

    Roy traded to Canucks

    Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

According to multiple reports, general manager Joe Nieuwendyk informed Jagr that he was going to be traded. Clearly, Nieuwendyk was not confident that either Jagr or Roy were going to be re-signed and believes it is in the best interest of the team to collect assets instead of losing the players for free.

Roy is currently playing in the final year of a six-year, $24 million contract that carries an annual average value of $4 million against the salary cap.

    Jagr to be traded

    Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

Dallas and Jagr had both expressed an interest in extending his one-year contract. However, the two sides have failed to make any progress on a deal and it seems general manager Joe Nieuwendyk will look to deal the 41-year-old forward.

In 34 games this season, Jagr has registered 14 goals and 12 assists for a total of 26 points. He leads the Stars in goals and points entering competition on Tuesday night.

    Marc-Andre Bergeron traded to Hurricanes

    Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Earlier on Tuesday, Renaud Lavoie of RDS reported that Bergeron was not on the ice for the team’s practice and stated that he should be traded. Less than one hour later, he was dealt to the Hurricanes.

Bergeron is currently playing in the final year of a two-year, $2 million contract that carries an annual average value of $1 million. He will become an unrestricted free agent this July. In 12 games this season, the 32-year-old defenseman has recorded a goal and four assists for five points.

Kiprusoff to Maple Leafs picking up steam

    Doug Pensinger

Dreger reported on Monday that Calgary had given Toronto permission to speak with Kiprusoff. Nonis engaged in discussions with Kiprusoff’s agent Larry Kelly and, apparently, those talks were fruitful enough that the two sides believe direct interaction with the player is warranted.

According to previous reports, it appeared as though Kiprusoff had no desire to be traded. Some accounts stated the goaltender would not report to his new team in the event of a trade, while his former head coach Mike Keenan stated Kiprusoff signed his current contract with the intention of retiring before the final year of the deal.

    Pominville being shopped by Sabres

    Timothy T. Ludwig-USA TODAY Sports

The request was submitted to Pominville by general manager Darcy Regier, who reportedly explained that he needed to see what was available on the trade market. Pominville is currently playing in the fourth year of a five-year, $26.5 million contract that carries an annual average value of $5.3 million against the salary cap. His contract contains a no-movement clause and a modified no-trade clause, which allows him to identify eight teams he won’t accept a trade to.

The NHL trade deadline is 3 p.m. ET Wednesday.

    Handzus traded to Blackhawks

    USA TODAY Sports

The deal is still pending a trade call, but San Jose will receive a fourth-round draft selection in return.

Chicago was believed to be looking for depth at center, which explains why they would acquire Handzus. The 36-year-old forward is playing in the final year of a two-year, $5 million contract that carries an annula average value of $2.5 million against the salary cap. His contract contains a no-movement clause, which means he had to waive it in order to join the Blackhawks.
