Catania didn't make the worst of showings in their match against Bologna, but the home side were able to easily shut down the visiting offense, and made the most of nearly every chance they created. It may have been less exciting than Bologna's other victory this season, the come-from-behind win over AS Roma, but it was certainly less nerve-racking than the visit to the Olimpico.

It was Catania who looked to be the better side at first, forcing a desperate clearance from the defence to compensate for goalkeeper Gianluca Curci's error in the first minute. But it didn't take long for Bologna to assert their dominance of the match. Tiberio Guarente volleyed in the first goal, in the 19th minute, taking advantage of the rossazzurri's attention to Alberto Gilardino.
It turned out that Catania were right to fear Gilardino. It was he who knocked in the next two for Bologna, on either side of the break. The first goal came from a low shot that easily beat Mariano Andujar, the second a bullet of a header from close range.
Even with Curci replaced by Federico Agliardi for the second half, Catania couldn't find their way on to the scoresheet, despite their ability to maintain possession. Instead, Bologna drove the final nail into the coffin with the last play of the match. Alessandro Diamanti tried his luck, Andujar managed to push the shot away, but Panagiotis Kone pounced for the fourth rossoblu goal.
