Werder Bremen broke their two game losing streak settling for a disappointing 1-1 draw in Augsburg. It’s a missed opportunity for Bremen to leapfrog back into second place.
FC Augsburg Vs. Werder Bremen, 2011 Bundesliga: Visitors Settle For Disappointing Draw
The visitors were on the attack early forcing goalkeeper Simon Jentzsch into several excellent saves. They almost took the lead in the 20th minute when Jentzsch blocked a shot by Markus Rosenberg off of the crossbar.
Augsburg were content to sit and counter and came close minutes later, but a last second tackle by Naldo on Axel Bellinghausen prevented an excellent opportunity for the hosts to take the lead. Bremen dominated possession in the first half but failed to create many scoring chances. Augsburg came close again in the 36th minute when Bellinghausen forced Tim Wiese to make a good save to keep the ball out of the net.
Just after halftime Bremen defender Andreas Wolf whiffed on a back pass to Wiese, and Augsburg forward Sascha Mölders was there to pounce on his mistake. He fed the ball over to Bellinghausen with a cheeky backheel and the midfielder took one touch before putting the ball in the back of the net giving the hosts the lead.
Thomas Schaaf threw caution to the wind and brought on both Mehmet Ekici and Sandro Wagner in hopes of finding an equalizer and possibly the winner. The equalizer would be found in the 67th minute courtesy of none other than Claudio Pizarro. The Peruvian headed home a Ekici corner flicked on to the back post by Wolf. Bremen continued to pour on the attack throughout the remaining minutes, but were unable to find the winner.
For Bremen, Aaron Hunt was very poor again. At this point, it’s difficult to see why he’s starting over Ekici who has provided much more going forward in the attack so far this season. If Bremen plan on keeping their place around the top of the table, Schaaf is going to have to make the difficult decision and put Ekici into the starting eleven over Hunt.
