German Bundesliga 2011, Week 10: Hannover Best Bayern 2-1, Schalke Defeat Leverkusen

Hannover 96 defeated Bayern Munich 2-1 to end Bayern’s unbeaten run that dated back to the opening Bundesliga fixture against Borussia Mönchengladbach on August 7.

Manuel Neuer had gone 771 consecutive minutes in the Bundesliga without seeing the ball in the back of his net, but it came to an end on Sunday when Philipp Lahm fouled Steve Cherundolo in the penalty area setting up a penalty by Mohammed Abdellaoue. Neuer chose the correct side, but Abdellaoue’s shot beat him to the spot and Hannover took an improbable 1-0 lead.

Jefferson Farfan scored in the 82nd minute to give Schalke a 1-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen at the BayArena in Leverkusen.

Schalke manager Huub Stevens stuck with young Lars Unnerstall in goal instead of throwing new signing Timo Hildebrand into the fire immediately. Unnerstall did well to keep the ball out of his own net and showed why he would fight to remain the Schalke number one over Hildebrand.

Hertha Berlin and Mainz played to a scoreless draw in the capital in a match that neither side want to see replicated this season.

With the draw, Mainz has now gone eight matches without a victory after they won the first two matches of the season. That run consists of five losses and now three draws. The point earned does pull Mainz out of the relegation zone. They now sit on eight points which is one point from safety. Hertha sit comfortable mid-table at the moment.

Vedad Ibisevic scored his first goal of the season in his second appearance since returning from an injury that sidelined him for the first two months of the campaign.

In the 56th minute, the Bosnia and Herzegovina international jumped a loose ball in the box and was able to poke it into the net before Gladbach goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen was able to make the save.

Itay Shechter scored the only goal of the match to send Kaiserslautern on the way to their second straight win in the Bundesliga.

The Israeli international scored when Martin Amedick flicked on a long throw in during the 75th minute. Shechter had just been denied minutes before when his shot struck the underside of the crossbar and bounced down on to the goal line. The goal was Shechter’s third of the season.

Nürnberg took the lead two different times on Stuttgart, and both times the Swabians pegged them back to see the match finish in a 2-2 draw.

Timmy Simons started the scoring in the 9th minute pouncing on and finishing a loose ball in the Stuttgart penalty area after a corner by Marvin Plattenhardt. The quick goal put the home supporters in full voice, and they pressed forward looking for their second goal of the half. It wouldn’t come, and they went into the break with a 1-0 lead.

Borussia Dortmund were determined to put their disastrous midweek performance behind them and made sure it happened immediately against FC Köln in the Westfalenstadion in Dortmund. didn’t resemble the same side that had won three of their last four matches as they sat deep in their own half throughout the match and allowed Dortmund to boss the match.

The first goal went into the net in the 7th minute, and they never looked back. Mats Hummels played a ball out of the back over the top, and Kevin Großkreutz ran on to it. He pulled it back through three defenders to Shinji Kagawa, and his shot found the back of the net.

Werder Bremen broke their two game losing streak settling for a disappointing 1-1 draw in Augsburg. It’s a missed opportunity for Bremen to leapfrog back into second place.

The visitors were on the attack early forcing goalkeeper Simon Jentzsch into several excellent saves.They almost took the lead in the 20th minute when Jentzsch blocked a shot by Markus Rosenberg off of the crossbar.
