Jefferson Farfan scored in the 82nd minute to give Schalke a 1-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen at the BayArena in Leverkusen.
Bayer Leverkusen Vs. FC Schalke 04, 2011 Bundesliga: Jefferson Farfan Wins It Late
Schalke manager Huub Stevens stuck with young Lars Unnerstall in goal instead of throwing new signing Timo Hildebrand into the fire immediately. Unnerstall did well to keep the ball out of his own net and showed why he would fight to remain the Schalke number one over Hildebrand.
Leverkusen did breach the Schalke goal once, but Michael Ballack's strike was called back for offside. Ballack was also involved in a bust-up with Schalke midfielder Jermaine Jones, and Stevens made no bones about giving the former Germany international a piece of his mind.
The victory for Schalke moves them to third in the table just four points behind leaders Bayern Munich who are in action against Hannover 96 today. They also now sit just one point behind rival Borussia Dortmund. The loss keeps Leverkusen down in 9th place.
