Timmy Simons started the scoring in the 9th minute pouncing on and finishing a loose ball in the Stuttgart penalty area after a corner by Marvin Plattenhardt. Stuttgart came out of the halftime break on the attack determined to make the hosts suffer for not getting a second goal at the end of the half. Stuttgart found the break they were looking for when Martin Harnik saw his shot stopped by Philipp Wollscheid. Zdravko Kuzmanovic stepped to the spot and scored to make the score level.
Nürnberg quickly gathered themselves however, and just ten minutes later they were back on top. Plattenhardt sent a free kick into the box from just inside the Stuttgart half, and Wollscheid met it with his head to take the lead back. The young defender was able to go from goat to potential hero in only ten minutes.
Stuttgart began to throw players forward in attack as the game wound down. They would find another equalizer in the 84th minute when Stuttgart defender Maza jumped above everyone and headed in a cross from William Kvist. The goal by the Mexican international was his first in a Stuttgart jersey.
