Hurricane Irene has forced a third MLS match to be moved to a later date as officials have decided to call of Saturday's meeting between DC United and the Portland Timbers. That match had originally been moved from 7:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. in order to get ahead of the storm. But with the storm already hitting the Carolinas, officials apparently thought better of it. A new date for the United-Timbers match has yet to be announced.
Hurricane Irene Forces DC United-Portland Timbers Match To Be Rescheduled
Irene had already forced officials to move both of the matches that were scheduled for Sunday, including the nationally televised encounter between the New York Red Bulls and the Los Angeles Galaxy. That match was moved to Oct. 4.
The storm is expected to be among the worst to hit the East Coast in more than 50 years and officials estimate that it could cause billions of dollars of damage. More than 65 million people live in its expected path.
