The roller-coaster ride that has been FC Dallas' last couple weeks continued to get a little wilder on Sunday when it was announced that star center back George John will remain with the team after he apparently failed to come to personal terms with the Blackburn Rovers. About a week ago, MLS and Blackburn had agreed to transfer terms and a move was believed to be imminent. Last Monday, it was confirmed that John had left for Europe in order to acquire his Greek passport and negotiate the final terms of the deal.
George John Will Remain With FC Dallas, As Blackburn Transfer Deal Crumbles
That was apparently more than a mere formality, as many of us assumed. FC Dallas President Doug Quinn made a point of telling fans on Wednesday that the deal was not finalized, something he was happy to remind everyone of on Sunday:
As I have always said, nothing is done till it is done! George is on a plane to Seattle to rejoin his team, FC Dallas. DTID #fcdallas
dRumors of John's transfer to Blackburn first surfaced about two weeks ago. The following weekend, the Toros lost to the Seattle Sounders and in the process, also lost defender Zach Loyd to an injury. The following week, they were forced to play 1.5 games in two days against Toronto FC when lightning caused the abandonment of their CONCACAF Champions League match on Wednesday with FC Dallas leading 1-0 at halftime. The Toros went on to win the replay.
On Saturday, FC Dallas trailed Sporting Kansas City 2-0 in the 70th minute, but came back to win on a stoppage time goal from rookie Bobby Warsaw. That victory kept their slim Supporters' Shield hopes alive.
Now, it looks like they’ll be considerably closer to full strength for Tuesday’s U.S. Open Cup semifinal against the Sounders. John did not play in their most recent meeting while he sat out with a red-card suspension.
