There's something deeply dissatisfying about a match destined for a 0-0 stalemate that's decided by a silly late own goal, and that's exactly what happened as Palermo dispatched themselves against an under-par Inter Milan at the San Siro on Sunday.
Inter Milan vs. Palermo: Final score 1-0, quiet game settled by own goal
It was not an electrifying match. With Inter not offering much in the way of an attacking threat and the visitors seemingly playing for the draw (and apparently intent on ruining any opportunities they may have had on the counterattack with incredibly lax passing), it didn’t exactly make for compelling viewing, even on the rare occasions that the hosts generated a half-chance.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 74th minute. An innocuous-looking cross from Andrea Ranocchia was going nowhere until Santiago Garcia lunged to his left in a silly attempt to block it off. With Samir Ujkani wrong-footed, the ball trickled in at the near post, and Palermo, focused on maintaining the clean sheet, couldn't muster up nearly enough of a response to get a point.
