AS Roma sells Erik Lamela to Tottenham Hotspur

After a great deal of rumor and speculation, the transfer of Argentine forward Erik Lamela from Roma to Spurs is complete.

AS Roma made the transfer of Erik Lamela official today, announcing the agreement of a deal with Tottenham that sends the Argentine striker to Spurs in a deal worth €30m with another €5m in performance-based escalators.

Roma released a brief, official statement outlining the deal in one succinct paragraph. Very efficient.

The signing a boost for Tottenham on the same day that near signing Willian finalized his deal with Chelsea.

Lamela is a 21-year-old forward who began his professional career with River Plate in 2009 before moving to Italy in 2011 when he signed with Roma in a €14 million deal. Lamela made 62 appearances with the club over two seasons, scoring 19 goals. He’s also earned three caps with the Argentina national team.

At the moment Tottenham have yet to make an statements about the Lamela deal, but something should come in the next day or two. They could be waiting for a combined announcement with another potential signing as team officials are rumored to be in Amsterdam trying to hammer out a deal for Ajax’s Chrsitian Eriksen.

There have been several reports that Roma supporters are not pleased with the club selling Lamela and this announcement will likely stir them up even more, for obvious reasons. Roma did buy Adem Ljajic as a replacement for Lamela, but even that is unlikely to quell the fan unrest.
