James McCarthy joins Everton from Wigan

Although it times it looked as though this deal might not happen, James McCarthy has been reunited with manager Roberto Martinez at Everton. Having spent several seasons together at Wigan Athletic, it was natural that Martinez would turn to the young midfielder to replace the Manchester-United-bound Marouane Fellaini.

Wigan and Everton were arguing over both the size of the fee and the payment mechanism until deep into the evening, but a few minutes before the window closed the sides announced that they’d agreed on a £13 million fee, and now the Toffees have officially confirmed McCarthy’s arrival (along with several other deals).

McCarthy comes with plenty of Premier League experience, and he’ll probably be thrilled to be able to play in the top flight without the constant threat of relegation looming over his head. Meanwhile, Wigan get a whole boatload of cash and Everton get a fine player. Everyone’s a winner!
