Sunderland started the season extremely thin in the center of midfield, so Paolo Di Canio was understandably delighted to add Swansea midfielder Ki Sung-Yueng on loan from Swansea. The deal was actually completed on Saturday, though details didn't come out about the deal until Monday.
Sunderland sign Ki Sung-Yueng on loan
Sunderland have found some much needed help in the center of their midfield.
Di Canio spoke about the deal on Sunderland's website:
“It’s obvious that he has quality, physical presence and he’s young. The fact that he played for a few years already in British football made me happy that he decided to sign for us. He played lots of games for Swansea - a good team who play good football. He’s a player who can build up from the back in the way I want; he plays tactical balls and has a long range of delivery with precision.”
Ki, who has starred for Celtic and the South Korean national team in recent years, had a bit of an up-and-down season with the Swans during their last campaign. He put in plenty of good performances and showed flashes of brilliance, but was not consistent for Michael Laudrup’s side. With Swansea bringing in a couple of midfielders from La Liga this summer, Ki was expendable.
