Andrea Dossena joins Sunderland on loan from Napoli

Sunderland added a left back as their summer overhaul continues.

Andrea Dossena has joined Sunderland on a season-long loan, the Black Cats confirmed. The 31-year-old found himself on the outs at Napoli, where new manager Rafael Benitez didn't favor him, so he has found a new home for the year at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland need defensive help, having conceded five times in three matches so far. They have managed just one point as a result, although their two goals scored haven’t helped either.

Whether Dossena can unseat Jack Colback at left back remains to be seen. It has been no secret that Sunderland have wanted to upgrade at the position, but Dossena wasn't their first choice and he may just be cover for the local kid. Dossena has struggled in recent years, showing no defensive improvement even if he is an attacking threat down the left.

Dossena becomes the fourth Italian in Paolo Di Canio’s squad, which has undergone a significant overhaul this summer. He is one of 14 new players to join the Black Cats.
