Fiorentina are looking to shore up a shaky defense by taking Modibo Diakité on loan fro Sunderland until the end of the season. The Italian side are currently fourth in the Serie A table, trailing Napoli and the final Champions League spot by just three points. But with Vincenzo Montella so focused on a free-flowing, attacking game, the viola always look susceptible to opponents breaking through their defense.
Modibo Diakité moves from Sunderland to Fiorentina on loan
The viola are attempting to strengthen their back line by signing a defender that’s made just seven appearances in the past year and a half.
So Fiorentina turn to former Lazio man Diakité. Sunderland snapped up the 26-year-old last summer on a free transfer, but he's made just seven appearances with the club. Prior to that the defender had been with Lazio since 2006, making 83 appearances in that time. However, by his final season with the biancocelesti, the Frenchman first had to deal with injury, and when he returned, he'd fallen out of favor after refusing to sign a new contract. Diakité failed to make even one appearance in 2012-2013.
You have to wonder about Diakité's fitness, after spending most of the past year and a half sitting on a bench. But the viola clearly have little choice to strengthen their defense - guess they couldn't convince Manchester United to let go of Nemanja Vidic just yet.
