Barcelona had no answer for Atlético Madrid’s defense and counter-attack, while Bayern Munich sweated out a surprisingly tough match against Benfica.

    Brilliant Atléti eliminate Barça

That said, Atléti are often at their most dangerous when least dominant, and as Barça began to grow into the game, the hosts never looked fazed. They were as impeccably organized without the ball as ever, restricting the most dangerous attack in world football to almost nothing. It was a supreme defensive display.

Atléti were rewarded for their patience inside the final 10 minutes of the first half, when Saúl Ñíguez chipped a cross over for Griezmann. Left completely unmarked in the area, the Frenchman powered his header beyond ter Stegen and into the back of the net. Atléti led on the night, and led the tie on away goals.

Bayern advance after 2-2 Benfica draw

It was a hard-fought match that ended with an even 2-2 scoreline, but Bayern Munich are the only ones celebrating after their Champions League match with Benfica. Thanks to their 1-0 win in Germany in the first leg, Bayern won their quarterfinal tie 3-2 on aggregate, thanks to goals from Arturo Vidal and Thomas Muller at either side of halftime in Portugal.

The match got off to a predictably slow start, with Benfica defending staunchly while Bayern utterly dominated possession, holding more than twice as much of the ball than their Portuguese hosts did in the first half. They had a hard time actually breaking Benfica down, though -- their hosts were doing a good job of disrupting Bayern’s buildup play, pressing high and keeping the Germans from being terribly effective at creating dangerous chances.

Vidal’s laser striker gives Bayern the lead

    Octavio Passos/Getty Images

That’s an absolute rocket of a shot from outside the box by Vidal, and played off a rebound to boot. The best part? That’s his “weak” foot. If he’d hit that with his stronger foot, Vidal might have actually put that through the net instead of into it.

The goal also gives Bayern an away goal in the tie, which will prove vital if Benfica manage to score again. Benfica failed to score in the first leg in Germany, so if the match ends with the score level, Bayern go through on the away goals tiebreaker. In other words, Vidal probably just won this tie for Bayern.

Griezmann puts Atléti up on Barca

A sloppy turnover is what allows Atléti to catch the Barca back line out of position, but you can’t deliver a better ball than Saul did here. This is one of the best crosses you’ll see all year.

For those who think Atléti are likely to hold on -- not so fast. In all of the games between these teams this season, Atléti have taken a 1-0 lead, then Barca have won 2-1.

    Benfica vs. Bayern Munich lineups

The Champions League quarterfinals are coming to a close, and one of the fiercest battles of the first leg of the round is coming to Portugal for its conclusion. Bayern Munich beat Benfica 1-0 in Germany in a much narrower scoreline than they would have wanted, thanks in large part to a stellar performance from the Portuguese upstarts hoping for an upset. Can they manage another herculean performance on home soil to knock the German titans down? We’re about to find out.

Benfica will have to get the job done without some of their best players, though. Leading scorer and European Golden Boot competitor Jonas is suspended after picking up a yellow card in the last round to trigger an accumulation ban, and fellow key striker Kostas Mitroglou failed a fitness test and didn’t make the lineup or the bench. That takes over 50 goals in all competitions away from Benfica, and it’s only made worse with Nicolas Gaitan also missing the match through injury. The Argentine winger is the attacking engine that makes this team work, and his absence will be keenly felt.

Ronaldo doesn’t need adulation but demands respect

    Gonzalo Arroyo Moreno/Getty Images

Cristiano Ronaldo scored his second goal against Wolfsburg from a corner. As the ball was swung in from the right, he ran to the near post, tittering and swinging his arms manically from side to side as is his running form. Then he leaped into the air, higher than the three defenders behind him, and glanced the ball down to the far post. Perfect.

What was expected after the goal and any of his goals in the last few years is his trademark celebration. The one where he runs to a corner of the pitch, jumps, turns while in the air and lands in the powerful pose of having his legs and arms spread out as he flexes his muscles. It’s his version of the GladiatorAre you not entertained!?” scene.

How to watch Bayern Munich and Benfica online

Of course, Bayern aren’t going to go down so easily. If anything, last week’s results would have angered the German side, and they’re at their most dangerous by far when they’re angered. Just look at Juventus, who gave up four unanswered goals after going up 2-0 in the second leg of their Champions League tie with Bayern just a month ago. If that vengeful side of Bayern shows up in this match — well, it was fun having Benfica around while they lasted.

To watch this game online, you’ll be logging onto the Fox Soccer 2 Go subscription service in the United States, or with some internet providers you can use Fox Sports Go freely. Portugal won’t have the match online, but in Germany you can watch on Sky Go Deutschland, and for listings in other countries you can check out the LiveSoccerTV listings.

How to watch Atlético Madrid and Barcelona online

While Barcelona have the scoreline advantage, the tie is anything but settled. Atlético’s away goal could prove decisive with a better defensive performance on home soil, especially if they can find a way to score an early goal to level the aggregate scoreline. If they do manage to put a goal on the board early on, the tie will be wide-open, and everyone will be on the edge of their seats as they watch these two elite teams slug it out in a battle for dominance.

You’ll have a variety of options should you choose to watch this match online. In the United States, it will be on the Fox Soccer 2 Go subscription service, or freely with some internet providers on Fox Sports Go. In Spain, it will be carried on beIN Sports Connect S.P., and in England, it’s on BT Sport Live Streaming. In other countries, you can check out the listings at LiveSoccerTV.

Atléti look to come from behind against Barça

Though we have no idea how this game is going to turn out, we can predict with some confidence that it’ll be won and lost in Atléti’s transition between defense and attack. There are few finer teams on the planet on the counter-attack than Simeone’s side, and Barcelona’s defence is notoriously vulnerable against such opposition. If the hosts can nail their transitions, they’ll probably win the tie.

Benfica will be without goalkeeper Júlio César and young winger Nuno Santos through injury, while prolific striker Jonas will be sorely missed with a suspension. However, they’ll hope to have Argentine attacker Gaitán back after a muscular injury.

Benfica look to upset Bayern Munich

That means the Portuguese outfit still have an outside chance of pulling off one of the biggest shocks of the tournament so far, and eliminate one of the major favourites. They’ll take heart from the disastrous performance Bayern put in on their last visit to Portugal, when Porto recorded a 3-1 win against the odds at this stage of last year’s Champions League (only to be beaten 6-1 in the second leg). Benfica also head in having failed to win only twice in all competitions since the turn of the year: They could hardly be in better form.

Benfica will be hoping Renato Sanches continues to deliver performances way beyond his 18 years, with the young Portuguese international set to start in the centre of midfield on Wednesday. He’s been attracting the attention of some of Europe’s biggest clubs with a series of all-action displays in a breakthrough season, and he’ll have to be at his very best to give Benfica a chance.

3 things we learned from Man City downing PSG 1-0

Manchester City came into this match with a surprising advantage over Paris Saint-Germain, having earned a 2-2 draw in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal tie. A determined performance from the English side saw them hold their French opponents at bay, while a huge goal from Kevin De Bruyne gave them a 1-0 win in the match and a 3-2 win in the tie, upsetting the odds and earning City a berth in the semifinal for the first time in their history.

The match started with Manchester City largely on top, trying to push the ball forward quickly to take advantage of PSG looking slightly unsettled in a new and different shape. The 3-5-2 that they adopted for the match to help deal with injuries, suspensions and their weaknesses from the first leg allowed them to keep City at bay, but the Parisians struggled to move the ball forward effectively themselves while they adapted to their new shape. Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Edinson Cavani were finding plenty of space against Manchester City’s defense, but PSG’s midfield struggled mightily to actually get the ball to them.

Ronaldo sees Real Madrid into the semis

Extra time seemed increasingly inevitable, but Ronaldo had other ideas. With just over 10 minutes left he curled an inch-perfect free-kick beyond Benaglio and into the back of the net to seal his hat trick. From there the German side had no way back and only a couple of fine saves by Benaglio on Benzema and Jesé prevented Madrid from making the scoreline even more one-sided.

    Goals: Ronaldo (15’, 17’, 77’).

Ronaldo completes hat trick with free kick

He gets plenty of shtick for not being as good at taking free kicks as he is at everything else, but this is Ronaldo at his best. It’s so hard to get a ball up and down as quickly as he did, at the pace that he did, and Madrid lead thanks to this fantastic strike.

De Bruyne curls in a stunner

Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Kevin Trapp never had a chance at this one. Even if he saw it on time, De Bruyne had curled this shot so perfectly that it probably would have gone in anyway. With his late reaction, he was miles behind. This made it 3-2 to Manchester City on aggregate, and they have two away goals. PSG need to score twice.

    Ronaldo erased Wolfsburg’s lead quickly

Their first goal was nothing special. Just a bunch of bits of very bad passing and very bad defending. Die Wölfe should have stopped this one several times over and failed to do so. The second goal, though...

That’s clutch from Ronaldo. It’s a run, jump and header that very few other players in the world would make. So much for the idea that he doesn’t come up huge for Madrid in big games. It’s 2-0 on the night and 2-2 on aggregate.

Manchester City vs. PSG confirmed lineups

Manchester have left Yaya Toure out of their starting lineup despite his return to health, instead opting to go with the same midfield duo of Fernandinho and Fernando Reges that started in France. That pairing struggled mightily against PSG’s midfield, so the decision is something of a curious one -- but perhaps not as curious as PSG’s lineup.

The French side are starting both of Edinson Cavani and Zlatan Ibrahimovic up front, but everything behind them is in varying degrees of flux. Ostensibly, it looks like a 4-4-2 with normal fullback Gregory Van der Wiel playing as a winger across from Angel Di Maria, but it doesn’t take much in the way of mental gymnastics to see this same starting XI as a 3-5-2, with Serge Aurier playing in the back 3, Van de Wiel and Maxwell playing as wing backs, and Di Maria starting out behind the two strikers. It’s an interesting lineup to be sure, and seeing how it plays out will be fascinating.

How to watch Real Madrid and Wolfsburg online

There’s no simpler way to put this -- Real Madrid got their butts handed to them by Wolfsburg last week in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal tie. The German side’s 2-0 win could and arguably should have been even wider, and the shock was only increased by the fact that Madrid were riding high after winning El Clasico just days before.

Tottenham must seize opportunity against Man Utd

    Julian Finney/Getty Images

Tottenham Hotspur are still very much in the Premier League title race, but with just six matches left and a seven point gap between them and league-leading Leicester City, they can’t afford any slip-ups now. That makes this match against Manchester United a tricky one -- Manchester have had their struggles this season, but they have won four of their last five matches to climb to fifth place in the table. They’re not going to be an easy team to beat, even with the homefield advantage of White Hart Lane playing in their favor.

Still, they’ll be feeling good about their chances. It took an own goal for Manchester to beat Tottenham in the season’s opening week, and Spurs are playing much, much better on the whole than they were early in the season, while Manchester have taken a decided step back. It won’t be an easy match by any means, but a win here would be a huge boost to Tottenham’s confidence levels -- and it might just be enough to see them push through to the end of the season as hard as they can, chasing Leicester until the bitter end.

Liverpool face tough Stoke test on Sunday

    Alex Broadway/Getty Images

Liverpool have won three straight games against Stoke City, and haven’t been beaten by them since a remarkable 6-1 loss at the Britannia Stadium last May. Suffice to say, we’re unlikely to see a repeat of that result on Sunday. Indeed, Stoke have remarkably not won at Anfield since way back in 1959, and have only won thrice away at Liverpool since 1894. It’s an impressive record that Liverpool will do their all to maintain.

Liverpool will still be without a handful of important players, with the most recent additions to their list of absentees being midfielders Can and Henderson, who are suspended and injured respectively.
