Western & Southern Open 2012: Novak Djokovic Advances, Serena Williams Upset In Quarterfinals

The 2012 Western & Southern Open featured another great day of tennis on Friday. We are getting into the later rounds of the tournament and many of the world’s best players remain in the hunt for a title.

On the men’s side of things, No. 2 seed Novak Djokovic defeated No. 12 Marin Cilic in the quarterfinals. Djokovic took the match in two sets, winning 6-3 and 6-2. The other quarterfinals match was between six-seed Juan Martin Del Potro and unranked Jeremy Chardy, with Del Potro winning both sets, 6-1 and 6-3. Roger Federer swept his match with Mardy Fish to advance to the semifinals.

Serena Williams and Venus Williams both played their quarterfinal matches on Friday. Venus was able to pull the upset over No. 3 seed Samantha Stosur, winning in three sets by scores of 6-2, 6-7 and 6-4. Serena, who is coming off a gold medal victory at the Olympics, did not look sharp and lost to five-seed Angelique Kerber (4-6, 4-6).
