David Wright Back Injury May Require DL Stint

Back on April 19, Mets third baseman David Wright attempted to make a diving tag of Carlos Lee. He injured his back on the play, and it's bothered him off and on ever since. Monday, Wright was not included in the Mets' starting lineup, and according to general manager Sandy Alderson, it's because of his back. Via Amy K. Nelson:

Sandy Alderson says David Wright had MRI on his back, tentative diagnosis stress fracture in his lower back. getting 2nd opinion...

The interesting thing is that, while “stress fracture in his lower back” sounds really severe, this injury may not require a trip to the disabled list. The Mets are waiting on that second opinion, and for now he remains on the active roster. The hope is that he’ll only need about a week and a half of rest. But Alderson admits that he’s at least a little afraid of the injury lingering, and the DL is obviously a possibility.

Wright owns a .741 OPS on the year with six home runs. His numbers have actually gotten better since the date of his injury, which comes as a surprise. For as long as he's out, expect to see a fair amount of Willie Harris at third base.
