Fantasy football waiver wire: Best tight ends available in Week 17

The fantasy season wraps up and we also take a look ahead to 2018. Top 5 | QB | RB | WR | TE

For most of the fantasy football world, their season is over. The championships were in Week 16, so congratulations if you won, and condolences if you lost. Now we sit back, prepare for the real-world NFL playoffs, and maybe start talking to our families again.

That is, unless you’re in one of those leagues that plays into Week 17, which is weird, but we’ll try to help you out anyway. Week 17 can be tricky from a fantasy standpoint, given the number of playoff teams likely to rest starters, and non-contenders phoning it in with nothing to play for.

Therefore, the main focus should be on targeting teams still fighting for a playoff spot, especially if they’re playing one of those checked-out teams. If you play in a keeper or dynasty league, it’s also not too early to start planning for 2018, so take a look at some young names on the waiver wire who could be next year’s breakout stars.

With that in mind, for one final time this season, let’s look at the top five waiver wire options, owned in 50 percent or less of Yahoo! leagues.

Vernon Davis, Washington (48 percent)

Evan Engram is done for the year with a rib injury, so owners playing into Week 17 will need a streamer. Davis is still one of the top options despite his inexplicable disappearing act in recent weeks. He sort of came alive last week with 42 yards and a touchdown on two catches. The yardage is his highest total since Week 11. The 33-year-old has a great matchup with the New York Giants, but the last time these teams played on Thanksgiving, he put up a turkey with zero catches. We can only hope that won’t be the case this time around.

Charles Clay, Buffalo Bills (35 percent)

Much like the Bills’ offense in general, Clay comes and goes, with his hot streaks being hard to predict. He seemingly had a great spot against the New England Patriots, but he managed only 37 yards on four catches and dropped a touchdown. Clay should have a better time against the Miami Dolphins, and the Bills need all hands on deck as they try to win a playoff spot. Clay had five catches for 68 yards when these teams played just two weeks ago.

Antonio Gates, Los Angeles Chargers (22 percent)

Clearly in the twilight of his career, the 37-year-old Gates spent most of 2017 playing second fiddle to Hunter Henry. But now Henry is out for the season with a lacerated kidney, so Gates is back on the fantasy radar after scoring a touchdown in two straight games. He will probably struggle for targets in a Chargers offense with healthy weapons at receiver, but when they’re in the red zone, you can bet Philip Rivers will be looking for his old friend. The future Hall of Famer is a perfect DFS bargain against a bad Oakland Raiders defense.
