Fantasy football waiver wire: Best tight ends available in Week 3

The fantasy season is still young, with the bye weeks right around the corner. We take a look at the top tight end options available on the wire. Best overall | QB | RB | WR | TE

With two weeks down in the fantasy football season, we’re starting to get a better idea of where teams stand in 2017. It’s still a bit too early to be making any drastic changes to your roster, but owners should always be keeping an eye on the waiver wire in case injury or slumps are putting a dent in your lineup.

The tight end position got ravaged by injuries in Week 2. Greg Olsen is out 6-8 weeks with a broken foot, while Tyler Eifert is dealing with back and knee injuries that could keep him out of Week 3. A thin position group just got even thinner, so it’s time to hit the wire. Here are the top tight ends owned in 50 percent or less of Yahoo! leagues.

O.J. Howard, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (31 percent)

Howard was quiet in his NFL debut (just one catch), but he had a rather even timeshare with Cameron Brate, playing 45 snaps to Brate’s 37. The Bucs took the air out of the ball after taking a 26-0 halftime lead, so we haven’t learned much as to how Howard and Brate will be used together. Nevertheless, Howard is a bright prospect worth monitoring, even with the high learning curve for rookie tight ends.

Dwayne Allen, New England Patriots (8 percent)

Rob Gronkowski had a scare of his own, leaving the game with a groin injury. It doesn’t sound serious and he should be ready to play in Week 3, but this is another reminder of Gronk’s perpetual injury concerns. His body is just beat to hell at age 28. Fantasy owners should have Allen on emergency standby in case something else happens.

Austin Seferian-Jenkins, New York Jets (3 percent)

ASJ served his two-game suspension and is eligible to return this week. Maybe he’ll give the Jets offense a spark? Who knows. Stranger things have happened, like Jermaine Kearse being the No. 1 receiver after getting dumped by the Seattle Seahawks. As far as speculative deep dives go, ASJ is worth considering.

Ed Dickson, Carolina Panthers (less than 1 percent)

Dickson will be called upon to fill Olsen’s spot in the offense. A straight blocker for most of his career, Dickson hasn’t been fantasy-relevant since 2011, when he caught 54 passes for 528 yards and five touchdowns. The 30-year-old is frankly a mediocre receiving talent, but he does have one of the best Week 3 matchups against the New Orleans Saints. If nothing else, he’ll be dirt cheap in DFS, so it’s worth a shot there.
