Arizona’s Andre Ellington out for season with hernia injury

The Arizona running back will be placed on season-ending injured reserve, per head coach Bruce Arians.

Arizona Cardinals running back Andre Ellington, who has battled a foot injury and a hip pointer this season, will not return to the field for the rest of the season due to a hernia, Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians announced on Sunday. Ellington was held out of the Cardinals' Week 13 matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs and had traveled to Philadelphia to meet with a specialist.

Despite being limited by injuries for much of the season, Sunday was the first game Ellington missed. He had rushed for 652 yards in 2013, averaging 3.3 yards per carry. But he also averaged more than 20 touches per game. Despite his low yard per carry total, Ellington was a major part of the Arizona offense. He came into the season with high expectations after averaging 5.5 yards per carry last season. He failed to match that average, but remained a solid contributor on the ground and in the passing attack.

The Cardinals will have to rely on rushers Stepfan Taylor, Marion Grice and Kerwynn Williams. Taylor will likely get the bulk of the workload with Ellington out, but he's also struggled to find much success, averaging 3.3 YPC on 31 carries this season. The Cardinals are currently 10-3 and on top of the NFC West.
