Bears place Brandon Marshall on injured reserve

Marshall is out for the rest of the season with a rib injury.

It was feared that Brandon Marshall could miss the rest of the season after a hit to the back knocked him out of the Chicago Bears' Week 14 tilt against the Dallas Cowboys. The team confirmed those fears Monday, announcing that the receiver will be placed on season-ending injured reserve.

Marshall suffered two fractured ribs and a lung injury according to Adam Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times. After inspecting him on the field Thursday night, the Bears’ medical staff had the wideout transported to the hospital where he remained for several days. Though Marshall returned home on Sunday, it was determined that the 30-year-old’s injuries require more recovery time than the remaining 2014 schedule allows.

To fill Marshall's spot on the 53-man roster, the Bears signed receiver Josh Bellamy off the practice squad. Bellamy previously played with Kansas City and Washington. To fill the vacancy on the practice squad, Chicago added former University of Illinois linebacker Jonathan Brown. Marshall finishes the season with 61 catches for 721 yards and eight touchdowns in 13 games.
