Andre Johnson, Percy Harvin hurting after Week 14

Yesterday’s NFL action featured a number of key injuries that affected both the NFL landscape and playoff fates for fantasy football owners across the nation. Here is SB Nation medical expert Dr. Ali Mohamadi’s Monday morning injury update from the week so far.

Houston Texans' wide receiver Andre Johnson will be put through the league's mandated concussion protocol this week after suffering a head injury on a hit by Jacksonville's Telvon Smith that knocked him out of Sunday's contest. Houston's hopes of stealing the AFC South from Indianapolis will hinge on its matchup with the Colts next weekend, and Johnson's health will be a key concern for the team as the week progresses. Texans fans, and fantasy owners, should have a good sense of his playing status by late in the week. If Johnson is unable to go, DeAndre Hopkins will be the main beneficiary in the Houston receiving corps going forward.

Percy Harvin was having his best game as a New York Jet on Sunday in a loss to the Vikings, with 124 yards and a touchdown through the air before departing with a left ankle injury. Neither Harvin nor the Jets' coaching staff had much to say about the injury, despite the fact that the speedy receiver left the stadium on crutches. Harvin will have further testing Monday to determine the extent of his injury and prognosis for the rest of the season, starting with next Sunday's matchup with 2-11 Tennessee.

Tennessee quarterback Zach Mettenberger aggravated a right (throwing) shoulder sprain when he was driven hard to the ground by the Giants' Devon Kennard in the fourth quarter of Sunday's loss to New York. He appears done for the season. A sprain technically involves tearing of the fibers holding the shoulder joint in place, with the degree of the tear resulting in a grade from 1 (least severe) to 3 (most severe). Regardless of the grade, shoulder sprains can often be treated without surgery, with pain management being the biggest concern as it heals. Jake Locker took over for Mettenberger after the injury, and he will likely start for the Titans next week against the New York Jets.
