Western & Southern Open 2012 Results: Donald Young Suffers 17th Straight Loss

The bigger names don’t start until Tuesday, but Monday’s first round at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati had its share of upsets.

A pair of No. 13 seeds fell, as Alexandr Dolgopolov lost to Nikolay Davydenko 6-1, 6-1 on the men’s side, and Jelena Jankovic fell to Peng Shuai 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (10-8) on the women’s side. Elsewhere, No. 15 seed Philipp Kohlschreiber was defeated by American Brian Baker 7-6 (9-7), 7-6 (7-3).

But in perhaps the most notable match of the day, American Jesse Levine defeated American Donald Young 6-4, 7-6 (7-2). The match was notable because it was the 17th straight loss for Young, who is threatening the Open-era record of 21 straight losses. As you would expect, the streak has been tough on Young. From Cincinnati.com:

“I don’t really think about it until the match starts to slip a little,” said Young of his skid. “I wouldn’t really say it’s so much the streak and the number of matches, it’s just the feeling of not having much confidence. It’s definitely tough when you haven’t won matches to (keep the momentum) at the time you need to - or shots you normally make, you miss.”
