The Redskins continue adding free agents with the addition of Madieu Williams and Tanard Jackson in free agency.
London Fletcher, Redskins Close To A Deal
The soon-to-be 37-year-old linebacker led the league with a career high 166 tackles last season. He is considered one of the Redskins’ prime targets this offseason despite his advanced aged (in NFL years). Head coach Mike Shanahan said at the annual league meeting last month that the team was very intent on re-signing Fletcher.

With the acquisitions of Garcon, Royal and Morgan, it appears the team is putting together a fearsome cadre of wideouts to accomodate whichever quarterback they start in 2012. If the Redskins trading up to the overall No. 2 selection in the 2012 NFL draft is any indication, Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III will soon not be lacking for any targets.

That’s two big pieces already in place for the Skins -- three if, like most observers, you assume they will use their No. 2 pick on Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Robert Griffin III. It has already been a very productive offseason in Washington.

Garcon is coming off the best season of his career catching 70 balls for 947 yards and six touchdowns last season. The Redskins reportedly plan to add a high-profile receiver in free agency but their free agent efforts have been hurt by the ruling that they are out $36 million in cap space over the next two seasons.

Cutting a player like Atogwe is probably just the tip of the iceberg. After signing before the 2011 season, Atogwe only played in 13 games and made just eight starts. He did make 60 tackles and three interceptions in somewhat limited time, though.

Landry is a physical freak at the safety position, but how much money he will command in free agency still remains to be seen. Landry hasn’t played a full season since 2008, his second season in the NFL, and has played just a combined 17 games in the past two seasons. Landry is coming off an Achilles injury that has limited him the past two seasons.

Read Article >Fred Davis Gets Franchise Tag From Redskins, According To Report
It was reported weeks ago that Davis was likely to be tagged so this isn’t a big surprise. It’s a very affordable year to franchise tag a tight end at about $5 million. The final franchise tag numbers aren’t yet out but the league is expected to have them ready soon.
Davis’ 2011 season was cut short due to a suspension for a failed drug test. That’s definitely a concern but on the field he was solid catching 59 balls for 796 yards. The Redskins didn’t have many receiving options last season so it’s a no-brainer to keep one of the guys that still has potential. Davis is young and will get better. The real question in Washington is who will be throwing him the ball.

The Washington Post report says the Redskins plan to add a receiver in free agency, and not specifically the draft. However, if they can’t land someone in free agency, they would be manned with the sixth overall pick, potentially a spot for Justin Blackmon. All of this depends on how the Redskins quarterback situation pans out, as that’s their priority.

Fletcher has been a tackling machine for the Redskins and is coming off a Pro Bowl season, but turns 37 in May. Landry was playing at an All-Pro level and likely would have already signed a contract extension had he avoided the injuries that have limited him to just 17 games over the last two seasons. Davis had a breakout season in 2011, but that was cut short by a four-game suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.
Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network reports that Davis could receive the franchise tag, which is projected to be worth around $5.5 million in 2012.

(Photo by Patrick McDermott/Getty Images) Getty ImagesLa Canfora’s sources tell him that with Davis reaching the end of his contract this offseason, it is expected that Washington will place the franchise tag on him, since they have ample room to work with in their payroll.
Davis and Williams were suspended for the final four games of the 2011 season for repeatedly failing drug tests, a suspension that will also include the first four games of the 2012 season. Since his NFL career began in 2008, Davis has 131 catches, 1,648 yards and 12 touchdowns.
