Dunks ruining basketball

Kevin Young reminds you to follow your shot

There has been no shortage of outstanding dunks tonight. This one from Kevin Young goes right alongside the best of them. The Jayhawks find themselves in a battle against the No. 16 seed Hilltoppers of Western Kentucky. They’ll need a few more plays like this to pull away.

If you haven’t been watching, the evening games of day two of the round of 64 have been almost overloaded with impressive dunks. Florida Gulf Coast University alone made a highlight reel against Georgetown. Iowa State, inspired by tonight’s action, tried to join the air show. It went ... poorly.

Today has been a good day for monster jams. There was Florida Gulf Coast’s circus show against Georgetown, where they had enough GIF-worthy highlights to choke any browser.
Now the evening games are tipping off, and Oklahoma wants to get in on this alley-oop action too. It’s all the rage these days, kids.

Stephen DunnThe game started off as a score fest, with both teams making shots at will. Florida finished the first half shooting 54.8 percent, while the Demons shot 54.1 percent. The main advantage was on the glass, as the Gators out-rebounded the Demons, 14-8. Florida went into halftime up 40-32.
The second half was a somewhat different story. Florida continued making shots, but Northwestern St. simply went cold. The Demons scored just 15 points and made a pitiful five of 26 field goals in the second half. A 16-0 Florida run effectively iced this game.

The Eagles made things interesting early on, ending the first half on a 13-4 run and going into the locker room up, 24-22. Despite poor shooting (just 8 of 26 FGs in the first half), they bottled up Otto Porter, who finished the first half with just four points. FGCU was halfway to becoming the first No. 15 seed to win in this year’s tournament.
The second half quickly became the most exciting period of the tournament so far. The Eagles put on a dazzling show, ripping off a 21-2 run that included such gems as this:

Stephen DunnThen, the second half came.
Illinois went scoreless for 11 minutes 29 seconds after draining a pair of free throws 31 seconds into the second half. What was once a 16-point lead at halftime evaporated due to horrible shot selection and turnovers. The Illini responded though, hitting a trio of three-pointers in a matter of 90 seconds for a 9-0 run to retake the lead. Led by guard Brandon Hall, who had 16 points, Illinois came out on top with the 57-49 win.

USA TODAY SportsThe No. 16 Hilltoppers are making their second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. However, at 20-15 on the year, they had to win the Sun Belt Tournament to do so. Their best shot at taking down Kansas would probably be getting hot from three-point range, but that doesn’t seem particularly likely, considering they were tied for 246th in the nation this season in three point percentage.

USA TODAY SportsTwo power conference teams square off in second round of the South regional when North Carolina meets Villanova. The first half of the season was not kind to the Tar Heels, but that can all be washed away with a run to the Final Four. Villanova is seeking its fifth Final Four trip, having finished eighth in a very deep Big East this season.
Villanova (20-13, 10-8 Big East) enters the tournament with wins against some of the toughest teams in the nation. In a four-day period, the Wildcats toppled Louisville and Syracuse, and added wins against Marquette and Georgetown to their resume. Jay Wright likes to play his bench, with nine Wildcats averaging more than 12 minutes per game. To compare, Roy Williams only has six players that spend that much time on the court. Villanova will need to step out on Bullock’s three-point attempts and deal with McAdoo’s athleticism in the paint, or the Tar Heels will continue their run at another title.

Jonathan DanielLike Ohio State, Iona (20-13, 11-7 in the MAAC) will also rely on guard-play to get a win, highlighted by senior Lamont “Momo” Jones. The Arizona transfer averaged 23 points per game during the 2013 season, and was one of six Gaels to score at least seven points per game during the 2013 season. As a team Iona finished second nationally in scoring, averaging 80.7 points per contest.
The winner of this game will next square off with the winner of the No. 7 vs. No. 10 match-up in the West Region, between Notre Dame and Iowa State.

USA TODAY SportsAlbany coach: ‘We’re going to win this game’

Rob CarrAlbany coach matt Brown seems like an even-keeled dude. That’s why it wasn’t much of a surprise to see the CBS cameras catching him giving a “we did a good job” and “we have to relax” halftime speech.
His assistant, former Great Dane player Jon Iati, seems a bit more excitable. He also may have jumped the gun on his turn to talk, telling the team “we’re gonna win this game, fellas” from off-camera, before entering and giving more words of encouragement.
