SD State’s 1st half offense was offensive

No. 13 San Diego State is off to a solid start to the season. They haven’t blown away the competition, but were 6-1 entering Sunday with only a 61-59 loss to No. 3 Arizona. The Aztecs have been excellent on defense, but had some issues on offense. Those issues cropped up in a major way during the first half against Washington.

The good news for San Diego State? The Huskies aren’t exactly lighting up the scoreboard and Washington leads just 21-15 at the half.

Memphis’ Nick King dunked all over Bradley

For a moment, it appeared some solid Bradley defense was going to force Memphis into a turnover. Then, Nick King did this:

The players on the Bradley bench who stood up to cheer on good defense did not see that coming.

    Idaho’s court doesn’t have a charge circle

Idaho is playing UC Davis right now, and this happened:

But what makes this one weird is that it’s about court markings. The markings that are on the court for every game. This is Idaho’s fifth home game of the season. at the Cowan Spectrum. Have refs just not been able to make block/charge calls for the entirety of Idaho’s season? Did none of the previous refs notice this? I mean, it looks pretty obvious when you see the court.

Green Bay upsets No. 15 Miami

    Mary Langenfeld-USA TODAY Sports

The Miami Hurricanes are undefeated no more. After an impressive 8-0 start that included victories over Florida and Illinois, the Hurricanes met their match on Saturday against a talented squad from the Horizon League. Green Bay locked down on defense and received enough scoring from its starting backcourt to hang on for a 68-55 win over Miami in Coral Gables.

Green Bay held a big lead in the second half before Miami made a run. The Hurricanes turned up their pressure defense to force turnovers and score 11 unanswered points. The Phoenix would respond, protecting the ball and making their free throws to hold on for the team’s biggest victory of the season.

NJIT stuns Michigan in the upset of the year

    Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

Saturday saw the college hoops upset of the year when No. 17 Michigan was outplayed by unheralded NJIT, as the preposterously hot Highlanders knocked off the Wolverines 72-70 in Ann Arbor.

Before today, there were two notable things about NJIT: That the Highlanders went 0-29 in 2007-08, the only 0-29 year in college hoops history (they followed it up with a 1-30 season) and that they’re the only one of the 351 teams in Division I without a conference. On Saturday, they beat one of the top 25 teams in the country on the road.

Digger Phelps dressed up as Mother Ginger

This is Digger Phelps. Yes, the man best known for coaching Notre Dame and always having his highlighter match his tie. It looks like he’s enjoying himself in retirement.

Phelps was the halftime entertainment for Notre Dame’s overtime victory over Michigan State, dressed as Mother Ginger for the Sugar Plum Fairy dance from “The Nutcracker”. Apparently this is a tradition in South Bend. We like it.

What we learned in Duke’s win over Wisconsin

    Mark Dolejs-USA TODAY Sports

Duke led by as many as nine points with under nine minutes left, but Wisconsin would come back behind an inspired effort from Traevon Jackson. Jackson scored seven straight for Wisconsin at one point in the second half and finished with 25 points. Wisconsin got the deficit to within three in the second half, but could never overtake the Blue Devils.

Here’s three things we learned in Duke’s victory:

Mike Brey has a friendly suggestion for official

A questionable no-call in the closing seconds of Michigan State’s game against Notre Dame resulted in the contest going to overtime and not with the Fighting Irish’s Jerian Grant heading to the stripe for a chance to win it in regulation.

Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey was of the opinion that a foul did, in fact, take place, and that the referee with the best angle of the play should have found the intestinal fortitude necessary to blow his whistle.

UNC fans go green against Iowa

North Carolina fans attending Wednesday night’s Big Ten-ACC Challenge game against Iowa are being given green Tar Heel shirt made out of 85 percent recycled polyester and 15 percent cotton. The result is a Dean Dome that is noticeably lacking in the “Carolina blue” department.

The shirts are being provided by REPREVE, a company that turns recycled plastic bottles into yarn, and which is spearheading a “Turn it Green” campaign that UNC has adopted. The company says it took two plastic bottles to make each of the shirts handed out Wednesday night.

    This missed dunk is hilarious

This is a good missed dunk, which means it was a terrible miss. Phil Cofer of Florida State rose WAY up in what could have been an incredible highlight, but somehow found a way to send the ball over the backboard.

Who did it better/worse: Cofer or Keifer Sykes?
