College Football Saturday: Bama, Stanford Rout Rivals; VT, Wisconsin, Oregon Win Divisions

Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III finished out the first half, but appears to be done for the day after suffering an apparent head injury. Griffin III was hit hard and appeared to be dazed late in the second quarter, but it was only after halftime that the symptoms forced him from the game.

Griffin was seen on the sideline in a ballcap coming out of the half. His helmet was taken away, which would appear to be a sign of a head injury. Additionally, the Baylor coaching staff burned the redshirt of quarterback Nick Florence, which would also seem to be a sign Griffin III is done for the day.

If you enjoy shootouts, boy do we have the game for you. The Baylor Bears and Texas Tech Red Raiders are in a dog fight, and Robert Griffin is doing RGIII things. At the half, the Fightin’ RGIIIs lead Texas Tech, 31-28.

Baylor did receiver a scare for a moment, though, as Griffin III went down with what appeared to be an injury. Griffin III was dazed and confused, but any panic was short-lived: he returned a few plays later and didn’t seem any worse for wear.

The teams have combined to go 3-of-15 on third downs, which means there is plenty of room for improvement in the second half of this contest. Of course, Brantley needs to stop throwing picks in order to make that truly happen for the Gators.

Over the last two years, South Carolina has begun to establish a little bit more of a toehold in a rivalry that used to be all Clemson. And by the looks of things in the first quarter of the annual tilt this year, the Gamecocks kind of like the feeling.

That has been one part of the Bulldogs’ dominance over the Rebels. Ole Miss has just 65 total offensive yards to the Bulldogs’ 252. The passing yards are 70-40 in favor of the Bulldogs, but with the way this game has gone so far the Bulldogs won’t need to throw much in the second half.

The Bulldogs are just 30 minutes away from capturing the Golden Egg and bowl eligibility.

After a couple of more punts from both teams, Brantley was picked off by Mike Harris in Florida State territory, returning it all of 89 yards to the Florida four yard line. It was Florida’s only chance to score thus far in the game - but Brantley’s second pick of the day led to the Florida State score. A few plays later, and Devonta Freeman had another touchdown, a one yard rush on third and goal, to put Florida State up 14-0

As the first quarter draws to a close on this year’s edition of the Egg Bowl, it’s Mississippi State that has staked itself to a lead -- an imposing enough one on the scoreboard, 14-0, but a more sizable 169-19 lead in total offense. The game is still a rivalry matchup, but the Bulldogs’ lead against what is almost certainly the worst team in the SEC shouldn’t really surprise anyone.

With a win, Mississippi State can still make it to a bowl game. As for Ole Miss -- well, many of their fans are probably just happy to put this season and head coach Houston Nutt behind them.

Look at all that duct tape. Someone must know that duct tape is the best invention ever and should be used for anything. In this instance, it appears that it is to protect Tommy Trojan from any rambunctious UCLA students who want to cause a bit of mischief.

The Southern Miss Golden Eagles prevailed on Saturday, earning their way into the Conference USA 2011 Championship Game with a win over Memphis in the Battle for the Bones. They dominated in their win over Memphis, scoring at least twice in each of the first three quarters, and four times in the second. In the end, Southern Miss would wind up with a 44-7 win.

Southern Miss will next take on Houston in the Conference USA Championship Game.

Both teams entered this one with plenty to play for: bowl eligibility, to be exact. The winning side is up for a bid, while the losers are done for the year. For Marshall, the win would’ve meant s a chance to reach the Conference USA title game with a win next week and a Southern Miss loss, and thus the chance to knock Houston out of a BCS game. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. But Southern Miss is trouncing Memphis, so that’s all out the window.

Oregon is one step closer to the Rose Bowl after locking up a berth in the Pac-12 Championship with a convincing 49-21 win over rival Oregon State in the Civil War. But the win came at a price: running back LaMichael James left with his elbow wrapped in ice. Earlier this season, James went down with a dislocated right elbow, and appeared to be in serious pain after landing awkwardly again.

Besides the injury, it was another day at the office for the Ducks, who seemed to struggle early before hitting the gas and leaving Oregon State in the dust. A 21-point outburst in the second quarter, part of 35 unanswered points, was all Oregon needed to lock up the Pac-12 North title and a date with UCLA in the title game.

Bama concludes its year with zero regulation losses and a solitary setback, which came against the nation’s top team. It’ll take either a human revolt or against the concept of a rematch or an astounding performance by OSU to thwart an all-SEC national championship game. It doesn’t appear that even a LSU loss in the SEC Championship can stop this train.

On October 9th of this year, the Illinois Illini stood at 6-0, and everyone thought, “Well, boy howdy were we wrong about Ron Zook. What a fine coach he is, and a shoo-in for future huzzahs and laurels!” Oh, my how wrong we were.

This is the first time this has happened in the recorded history of FBS college football. Ron Zook football’s maddening inconsistency isn’t just a matter of popular myth anymore. It is now part of the college football fossil record.

Montee Ball just scored another touchdown. This is important because it was his fourth of the day, but also because it was his 34th of the season. He’s basically a one-man team.

Despite having outgained Kansas by more than 150 yards at the end of the fourth quarter, Missouri is only leading by seven points, 17-10. In fact, Kansas is still flirting with the 100-yard mark in total offense for the game.

For Kansas, Jordan Webb is 7-of-15 for 40 yards and a pick. The Jayhawks still have not scored since a pick-six early in the second quarter.

He was able to walk off the field, albeit slowly. On the sideline, his left forearm was being wrapped in ice by team medical personnel. There’s been no official word yet on the status or nature of his injury.

James, who’s meant so much to Oregon and became the school’s all-time leading scorer earlier in the evening, has proved himself capable of bouncing back from just about anything, but it’s hard to imagine how much more damage that wing can take.

Boise State finishes their season at home next Saturday against New Mexico, while Wyoming travels to Colorado State for its final game.

The two teams would go on to exchange punts, and Oregon took over with 1:44 remaining in the half. Naturally, they drove down the field, on the back of four straight completions from Darron Thomas, one of them going for 31 yards to David Paulson. Thomas would hit Barner for a 16 yard touchdown as the clock wound down, putting the Ducks up 28-7 at the half.
