Snap Judgments: The Michael Vick Reality Check, And Tony Romo’s Redemption Tour

Getty ImagesEvery Sunday, it seems like half of what we know about the NFL completely changes. So in the spirit of keeping track of what we learn (or what we think we learn), here’s a new series called “Snap Judgments.” Every week, we’ll have a rundown of what happened on Sunday, and what it (maybe, kind of) means.
By the end of the season, we’ll be able to look back at all these kneejerk reactions, and at least 50% of them will look completely ridiculous. But that’s part of the fun! Let’s start with Mike Vick.

Your soundtrack. Play it.
There comes a time in every lineman’s life when they have their moment in the spotlight. Or at least they hope they do. It’s a rare occurrence to see a lineman rumbling down the field with the ball, but when it happens, it’s pure, unadulterated bliss. It is, simply, poetry in motion.

Felix Jones Injury: Dallas Cowboys RB Diagnosed With Separated Shoulder
Dallas Cowboys running back Felix Jones has a separated shoulder, according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen. There is still indication of how much time Jones might miss, but the Cowboys will be watching his injury very closely. Jones carried the ball 9 times and caught a single pass in the Cowboys’ overtime win at San Francisco.
Jones left in the first quarter, holding his right arm in pain. Dallas trainers wrapped his arm, and he returned to the field for a few snaps. Last week, Jones rushed for 44 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries.

All eyes were on Tony Romo as he led the Dallas Cowboys to an overtime win over the San Francisco 49ers today. Playing with a cracked rib, Romo completed a 77-yard pass play to wide receiver Jesse Holley to set up the game winning field goal. Fans of football and reality television alike might remember Holley as the winner of Michael Irvin’s “4th and Long.”
Taped early in 2009, Michael Irvin’s “4th and Long” pitted six wide receivers against six defensive backs. The winner earned a place at the Dallas Cowboys’ training camp that year.

A cracked rib did not prevent Tony Romo from leading the Dallas Cowboys to an overtime win against the San Francisco 49ers. Romo came back into the game late in the third quarter, after most starting asking how many weeks he would miss.
On his second series after returning he threw for more than 80 yards, including a 25-yard touchdown strike to Miles Austin to make it 21-24. That play had nothing on Romo’s first and only overtime pass, the Cowboys’ first offensive play of the extra frame.

(Photo by Matthew Stockman/Getty Images) Getty ImagesIn a one-score game that was almost dead even in offensive plays, first downs and total yards, the Colts’ one more turnover than the Browns was ultimately the difference in a close game between two teams that are unlikely to be in playoff contention at the end of the season.

It was another frustrating day for Newton, who has now passed for at least 400 yards in both of his NFL starts. Just five other NFL quarterbacks have thrown for at least 400 yards in consecutive games. Newton opened the game by leading the Panthers to a touchdown on their first series and scores on each of their three first-quarter possessions, but his day took a turn for the worse from there. He threw three interceptions and the Panthers turned the ball over four times.
Still, they managed to be in position to tie the game in the fourth quarter. The Panthers were down 23-16 and had the ball inside the Packers’ 5-yard line. But Newton was sacked on third down and was then stopped short on fourth to turn the ball over. Two players later, Rodgers hooked up with Nelson to put the game away.
