NFL Odds Week 2: Patriots Are Heavily Favored

Detroit has visited San Francisco 10 times since 1981 and they have lost 10 times.

In those 10 games, the UNDER bet has been a winner for totals bettors nine times (one game was a push).

The Jets are 1-6 SU in seven trips here since 1981 and get plenty of respect from oddsmakers after their big win last week. The Steelers stumbled a week ago and the opening line has actually been bet down to -4.5 at one shop tracked by OddsShark.com (the lines provider to SBNation),

Safety Troy Polamalu and linebacker James Harrison did not practice on Friday and are questionable for Sunday.

The Rams have been a disaster at home in September games dating back many years. They are just 2-11 ATS in their past 13 at home during September.

But the Redskins, despite their Week 1 success, have not been a great bet as a favorite. In 12 recent games in that role, they have covered the spread just twice, according to the OddsShark.com Twitter feed.

If the amount of betting on this game is any indication, fans either don’t care much about the game or don’t trust either team with the Week 2 point spread.

“It’s the lowest-bet game volume-wise of the week so far, so fans are unaccustomed to the Raiders as road chalk and uncomfortable with the Dolphins, period,” said Bovada spokesman Kevin Bradley.

There are no guarantees in betting NFL games, but there is one bet that has been perfect 12 times since 1981.

”The point spread is not always the betting odds of choice when you are handicapping a game and that angle is proof,” said Jeff Grant of SportsbookReview.

And one of the most one-sided head-to-head trends in all of football is on play here as the Bills are 10-2 ATS in 12 games against KC since 1994, according to the Week 2 NFL trends list.

The Bills were holding steady as a 3-point home favorite at shops such as Top Bet. About 63 percent of the point spread wagering was on the Chiefs as of Friday, according to the NFL consensus data at OddsShark.com.

And they do so against a team they have dominated on the road (7-3 ATS past 10 trips to Carolina) and as 3-point road favorites, according to the NFL odds menu at OddsShark.com.

“Carolina is a rising team, but they have been horrible in the underdog, losing 18 of 19 SU over the past few seasons,” said Jack Randall of OddsShark.com, provider of lines to SBNation.

Houston was a 7-point road favorite and had been bet up to -7.5 and -8 at various online shops.

There isn’t much to dislike about the Houston Texans. Last year the defense quietly developed into one of the best in the league, and offensively you have three of the best players at their respective positions in quarterback Matt Schaub, running back Arian Foster and wideout Andre Johnson.

Week 2 in the NFL gets started with the Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers on the first edition of Thursday Night Football of the year. That isn’t the only big game of the week though -- the Jets visit the Steelers, the Eagles host the Ravens and the Falcons and Broncos will meet on Monday Night Football. Below, we attempt to accurately predict those, and every NFL game this week.

What a Thursday night opener. This is one of the best games of the year with two teams that have plans to make a deep playoff run. The Packers lost last week and I can’t imagine them going 0-2 on the season. Aaron Rodgers is too good, with or without Greg Jennings.

Philadelphia was a 1-point home favorite at midweek because the Ravens were the only team in this matchup that looked like a contender in Week 1.

The Eagles struggled to a weak win at Cleveland while the Ravens routed Cincinnati. And Baltimore’s recent history against the NFC East generally and the Eagles specifically is giving bettors more ammunition to bet on the Ravens.

Kickoff is scheduled for Sunday night at 8:20 p.m. ET from Candlestick Park, and the game can be seen on NBC.

Oddsmakers opened up the Saints as 6.5-point favorites. Bettors obviously were not so impressed with New Orleans’ opening performance, as the Saints are now favored at most sites by only 2.5 to 3 points.

The over-under sits at 51. In New Orleans’ last five games, the total has gone over every time, but eight of the last nine Saints-Panthers games in Charlotte have come in under the total. In the last 10 games between the two teams, New Orleans is 6-4 straight up, but the Panthers are 7-3 against in those same games.

According to the latest odds from OddsShark.com, Dallas is a 3-point favorite over Seattle with an over/under of 41.5.

Oddsmakers opened up the Eagles as 1-point favorites, at home. Lines are fluctuating between favoring the home team by a point to giving them 2.5. Baltimore is 4-1 straight up in its last five games; Philadelphia is 5-0 straight up in its last five games, but only 3-8 straight up in its last 11 games at home, and 3-6 against the spread in its last nine home contests.

The over-under opened at 43.5 and has bumped up to 46 at most shops. Both teams feature impressive defenses and potentially explosive offenses -- bettors should note that the total has gone under in six of Baltimore’s last nine games, and in four of Philadelphia’s last five.

OddShark’s Week 2 odds preview lists trends for each Week 2 matchup. It’s noted that Houston has gone 9-4 straight-up in its last 13 games while the total has gone over for Jacksonville in five of its last six games.

Five Dimes lists the Texans as 9-point favorites, while Bovada, SportsBook.com and Top Bet all have the Texans favored by 7.5 points. The over/under is set around 41.

Five Dimes, SportsBook.com and Top Bet all list Oakland as 2.5-point favorites with the over/under set around 38.

The game from Sun Life Stadium in Miami is a 1 p.m. ET kickoff, 10 a.m. for Oakland fans.

After opening as 4-point favorites, the point spreads have swelled in the Packers’ favor and are now at 6 points on most sites, even 7 on others. Although, considering the gap in the quality of each team’s first opponent, it’s not especially surprising that the Bears are considered underdogs for Thursday’s game.

The Giants have won each of the last three meetings between the two teams, including a 24-0 victory in Tampa Bay in 2009.

The over/under was initially set at 51, but it has since moved to 49, as bettors seem to be banking on more of a defensive affair.
