How did the AFC South grade out in the NFL Draft?

    Jerry Lai-USA TODAY Sports

The rest of the league may not have the AFC South to kick around much longer.

The Colts took something of a luxury pick in the first round, landing wide receiver Phillip Dorsett. That’s the kind of thing you can do in the back-end of the first round, however. Unfortunately, the Colts didn’t do much to address positions of need, such as the offensive line. Taking Denzell Goode with the No. 255 overall pick doesn’t really qualify here.

AFC North as a whole has excellent draft

    Dennis Wierzbicki-USA TODAY Sports

All four teams in the AFC North performed well in the draft, but the Steelers might have landed the biggest immediate playmaker in Bud Dupree. The pass rusher should make an immediate impact getting after quarterbacks, and it was a big surprise to see him fall to No. 22 overall. Dupree could contribute in Week 1 and battle for a starting role.

NFC West teams play the long game in NFL Draft

    Dennis Wierzbicki-USA TODAY Sports

Without a first-round pick, the Seahawks didn’t wind up making a selection until No. 63 overall when they took defensive end Frank Clark. This pick drew high marks from many given that Clark has a very high ceiling, but he also has character issues. But Seattle is typically regarded as a strong locker room and head coach Pete Carroll as a good judge of character, so the pick could turn out very well for them.

NFC North grades out well in NFL Draft

The 2014 season was a rough one for the Vikings and Bears. The pair won just 12 combined games, went 0-8 against the playoff-bound Packers and Lions and were both unofficially out of the division race by late November. But strong draft hauls by both franchises could help balance out the NFC North in 2015.

Minnesota, whose defense ranked a respectable 14th in yards allowed per game last season, went all-in on defense, spending its first three picks on that side of the ball and coming away with several potential starters. Chicago bagged a replacement for Brandon Marshall and picked up two immediate impact defenders.

AFC West contenders bet on offensive talent

    Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

The Broncos, meanwhile, added some potential immediate contributors to keep their closing championship window open, even if ever-so-slightly. The state of the AFC West is about to fall into flux, and sensing that, every team in the division may have taken even bigger risks than usual. We’ll soon see how those gambles pay off.

As for Edwards, Fischer liked him as a “top-tier” defensive lineman “who can play everywhere,” which Prisco viewed as a sign that Edwards doesn’t have a natural position.

Jets, Dolphins close gap on Patriots in AFC East

    Dennis Wierzbicki-USA TODAY Sports

One could argue that Miami should have snagged an offensive linemen sooner than the fourth round given the team’s need at the position, but overall there’s little that Dolphins fans shouldn’t be happy about.

The Jets had a great draft. Yeah, that’s weird.

Falcons win NFL Draft weekend in the NFC South

    Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Though many are unsure how Jameis Winston will pan out in the NFL, almost all agree he was probably the right choice at No. 1 overall. If the Buccaneers are going to get better quickly, they need to solidify the most important position on the field. Mel Kiper said it well: “When I speak to people in the league, we’re both stumped to find a player such as Winston, a No. 1 overall pick, with so many things about him that scare you to death. The key here is to realize you can agree with the pick without calling it a slam dunk.”

Gerald Christian named 2015 Mr. Irrelevant

    Jamie Rhodes-USA TODAY Sports

The 2015 NFL Draft came to a close Saturday when the Arizona Cardinals selected Louisville tight end Gerald Christian as the last pick of the seventh round, No. 256 overall. By being the last pick of the draft, Christian earned the somewhat dubious title of “Mr. Irrelevant.”

Though it may not seem like a particular achievement to be the last pick of the NFL Draft -- that is, beyond the honor of being named one of the best young football players in the country -- Mr. Irrelevant actually receives some pretty sweet perks. Christian and family will be treated to a week’s vacation in Newport Beach in an event founded by former USC receiver Paul Salata.

Browns get Ekpre-Olomu in 7th round

    Robert Hanashiro-USA TODAY Sports

With the No. 241 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns selected cornerback Ifo Ekpre-Olomu of Oregon. Ekpre-Olomu was a consensus All-American and a first-team All-Pac-12 selection last season.

In addition to those honors, Ekpre-Olomu was a finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award, given to the nation’s top defensive back. He finished his college career with 244 tackles, 6.5 of which were for a loss, and nine interceptions. His tackle numbers were high for a cornerback, and his interception numbers didn’t necessarily suffer for it.

Zac Stacy traded to Jets for 7th-round pick

    Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Zac Stacy has been traded to the New York Jets for the No. 224 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Stacy tweeted his displeasure after the St. Louis Rams selected running back Todd Gurley during the first round Thursday.

Stacy sent a one-word tweet simply saying “yikes” after the Rams took Gurley, who was considered perhaps the best running back coming out of college along with Wisconsin’s Melvin Gordon. Afterwards, he reportedly requested a trade from St. Louis.

La’el Collins at the mercy of the NFL

    Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

La’el Collins is in a situation unlike anything we’ve ever seen from an NFL Draft prospect. The highly regarded offensive tackle out of LSU had to fly back to Louisiana just ahead of draft day to be questioned in the murder of his pregnant ex-girlfriend. Police said that Collins is not considered a suspect, but it appears he will undergo a test to determine the paternity of the child, who died after delivery. In the meantime, he has fallen to Day 3 of the draft after being considered a surefire first-round talent entering the week.

Collins is losing a lot of money because of this situation, putting him in a precarious spot. No doubt he wants to play in the NFL next season, but he won’t be earning his maximum potential contract if he does. He and his representatives said that he would wait until the 2016 draft if he was bypassed on Day 2, but that plan may not work out as well as initially expected.

    Pittsburgh drafts Anthony Chickillo

    Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

Chickillo was an honorable mention All-ACC player in 2012 and started 34 consecutive games for the Hurricanes. He’s not known as an explosive edge rusher, but he’s one of the more consistent and reliable defensive ends in this year’s draft. He finished his 2014 season with 41 tackles (4.5 of which were for a loss), a forced fumble three sacks and three passes defensed.

Chickillo is a versatile lineman who can play multiple spots on the line, but scouts have had issues labeling him and it could wind up being a curse rather than a blessing. He’ll need to add weight and get some coaching, but Chickillo is a reliable player with a high ceiling.

    Gallik taken by Titans

    Winslow Townson-USA TODAY Sports

With the No. 208 overall pick of the 2015 NFL Draft, the Tennessee Titans selected offensive lineman Andy Gallik of Boston College. Gallik is a four-year starter who has over 40 starts at the center position, and was named a first-team All-ACC player in 2013.

Gallik’s best year was his last, but he also managed third-team All-ACC honors in 2013, starting all 13 games at center. He was named one of six Rimington Trophy finalists in 2014 for his play. Gallik’s best fit is in a power running scheme -- he’s a noted mauler with a ton of power in his upper body.

    Derron Smith drafted by Bengals

    Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

As a former high school quarterback, Smith knows how to read the opposing quarterback, picking off 15 passes during his time at Fresno State. He’s able to think his way into making solid plays and can play on the line of scrimmage or out in coverage. He uses his vision in tandem with his sound instincts to find himself in the right spots often.

Though he has the skill set to make it at the next level, he lacks ideal size and measurables consistent with NFL stars. Standing 5’10, he struggles against big receivers and tight ends in coverage. After dealing with a sports hernia injury during his senior season, Smith had surgery in December and had to skip workouts at the Combine in February. He was able to participate at Fresno State’s pro day, though, and put together a solid performance. Smith ran a 4.6 40-yard dash and also posted a vertical leap of 34 inches and a 10’3 broad jump.

    Buffalo drafts Nick O’Leary

    Melina Vastola-USA TODAY Sports

Where O’Leary excels is in his versatility. Not only can he block and is smart in pass protection, but he also has reliable hands and hardly ever drops a pass. O’Leary is a fiery competitor and he’s willing to do the dirty work in order to help the team. That kind of attitude will help him as he tries to find footing as an NFL player.

Because he’s not the most athletic player, O’Leary will have to outwork opponents in order to compete at the next level. He’s not much of a deep threat, either -- he only had six catches of 25 yards or more for his entire career, none of which were during his senior campaign.

NFL Draft 2015: Best players left on final day

Injuries are quickly becoming the storyline of the 2015 NFL Draft. We’ve seen teams reach on players in the first few rounds of the draft, while some very talented players wound up falling.

Jay Ajayi of Boise State was the biggest name still on the board after four rounds. Ajayi is one of the most-talented running backs in this year’s draft but his injury concerns had teams avoiding him until the Miami Dolphins finally pulled the trigger at No. 149 overall. He can be a major contributor if healthy.

    Rashad Greene drafted by Jaguars

    Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

The Jacksonville Jaguars have chosen former Florida State wide receiver Rashad Greene with the No. 139 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. As one of Jameis Winston’s most trusted targets throughout his career as a Seminole, Greene thrived in big moments and proved himself deserving of his selection as a Biletnikoff Award semifinalist in 2014. In that same year, he became Florida State’s all-time leader in both receptions (270) and receiving yards (3,830).

Where Greene excels is in his versatility. Even at a modest 5’11, 182 pounds, he manages to play effectively on the outside in addition to the slot. He demonstrated the ability to make pro-style catches with consistency, while also showcasing a talent for adjusting to poor throws when needed. He pulled in a career-high 99 receptions for 1,365 yards in his senior year.
