Mayweather handles Berto with ease to go to 49-0

    Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

If it was his last time in the ring, it wasn’t exactly the most memorable farewell. But Floyd Mayweather did what he always does, and that’s win, as he handled an overmatched Andre Berto with ease tonight, scoring a routine 12-round decision on scores of 117-111, 118-110, and 120-108. SB Nation had the fight 120-108 for Mayweather.

Mayweather (49-0, 26 KO) said before the fight that this would be the last of his career, though few believe that will be the case. At age 38, Mayweather reiterated after the fight that his career is over. “That’s official,” he said. “Berto was a tough competitor. He’s a very athletic boxer. What can I say? I was the better man tonight.”

    Mayweather-Berto live results, round 12

    Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

These may be the final three minutes of Floyd Mayweather’s boxing career, a curse and a blessing for the sport of boxing. He’s the biggest star in the game domestically, but it’s hard to imagine even diehard fight fans really missing nights like these. In short, he’s proven everything he can prove. Berto is no more or less a challenge, at least not significantly so, than anyone else would have been tonight.

Crowd booing somewhat halfway into the round, but that could be something going on in the audience, too. Mayweather pins himself in the corner and smacks Berto around at a standstill. Hook from Mayweather lands as he comes off the ropes. Hard right uppercut from Floyd hurts Berto, and now Mayweather is going for the finish with 45 seconds to go. Right hand from Mayweather, but Berto ties him up.

Andre Berto’s trainer Virgil Hunter tells him that the fight is close, that he is down one round. We have it 10-0 for Floyd Mayweather. We also hope Hunter is just trying to encourage his fighter and keep him from giving up.

Mayweather shoots and lands a hard left uppercut at center ring, then, comfortable with having landed that big shot, backs down and waits for Berto to wade back in and make the same mistakes he’s made all night. It’s hard to explain how one-sided this fight has been. This has been Mayweather’s easiest fight in many, many years. Mayweather landing constantly, whenever he throws. He’s tagging Berto at will and just playing with him at this point. In fact, he starts dancing and calling the crowd on. He’s playing with Berto, who shoots two punches but misses both as Mayweather artfully slips the shots. Floyd has the crowd rowdy, if only because he asked.

Floyd Mayweather told his father/trainer after round nine that his left hand is hurt, a recurring problem in his career. He is so well in control at this point that he could take the rest of the fight off and win comfortably, though, so it’s unlikely to be a real problem.

Things getting a little psychologically chippy in the ring, as Berto talks and Mayweather tells him to shut up. Bayless breaks up the fighters and admonishes them for talking trash. No one really understands why, unless we are pretending that this sweet science is indeed a gentleman’s endeavor. (It’s not.)

Boxing legends are BORED during Mayweather fight

According to Manny Pacquiao and Oscar De La Hoya, there really isn’t much happening in the world of boxing on Saturday night. The only way to kill time is to play the piano on an app or watch some Disney movies with the family at home.

Wait - Floyd Mayweather’s last fight is on Saturday night? Nah, it’s better to spend time bonding with your loved ones or honing your musical talents. Wake them up when the fight is over.

Andre Berto out jabbing a bit to start this round. Might be a little late for that, but you never know. Berto getting Floyd Mayweather to the ropes consistently, does nothing when he’s there. That’s pretty much the wash, rinse, repeat of this fight now. We’re in the final third of the bout and it is, as they say, what it is. There is nothing surprising happening.

Berto trying to throw in the clinch, then throws a flashy but empty flurry when they get close again. Mayweather clips Berto with a counter uppercut, with Floyd’s back against the ropes. Berto, to his credit, seems to be trying to do something special, and is loading up on every shot even more than he has been all night.

    Mayweather-Berto live results, round 8

    Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Andre Berto coming out in a stalking mode this round, but Mayweather picking him off when he wants to, too. As I’ve said repeatedly, the issue here is that Andre Berto is not good enough to beat Floyd Mayweather. He doesn’t have the things that might possibly trouble Floyd, and he’s past his prime, as well. This is just no competition for Floyd.

Berto seemingly has lost whatever confidence he might have had coming in. Berto can’t cut off the ring, can’t lead the offense, can’t counter effectively. He can’t work from range or inside. Mayweather with a 1-2 as he keeps just doing what he wants, when he wants. This is one-sided but not in a highlight reel manner. There’s a lot of nuance and craft in what Mayweather’s doing, but it is less impressive when he is this level of favorite, when the opponent is this clearly overmatched.

For reference, Showtime’s Steve Farhood has it 6-0 for Floyd Mayweather, as well, just like me, and everyone else on Earth, most likely, except maybe for an Andre Berto blood relative who might have given him Round 5, or someone who is upset that Mayweather is “running.”

So, yes, we’re already getting to the point of a Floyd Mayweather fight where your mind begins to stray, to think about the bigger picture of this fight. It happens in almost every Mayweather fight. There comes a point where it’s clear that there’s no hope for the other guy. With this one, it was never expected to be competitive. And it’s living “up” to that hype.

We’re closing in on the end of the first half of this fight, and thus far it’s been as expected: all Floyd Mayweather. Mayweather looking a hair more aggressive to start this round, and he’s whacking Berto to the body after Berto does land a decent counter left hand.

Crowd wakes up a bit as Mayweather shows some real life. His attack there looked kind of awkward, because it’s just not what he does. Strange, as Mayweather really never looks awkward in the ring. Everything is smooth and seems like he’s thinking well ahead of his opponent.

Andre Berto with a counter right, that’s something to try as Floyd Mayweather throws his own dangerous lead right. Berto just running himself square into Floyd all the time, making it incredibly easy for Floyd to disrupt his rhythm, because Berto is sabotaging his own rhythm in the first place.

Berto strays low going to the body, gets a soft warning from referee Kenny Bayless. Berto still chasing and missing Mayweather, getting handled easily by a much better boxer, trying to match wits with a ring master. This is not a good game plan for Berto, but that’s assuming a good game plan exists for Berto, too. Mayweather just waiting and baiting in there, playing with Berto, dancing around and poking him with little shots all the time. And tying him up, or making Berto tie him up.

    Mayweather-Berto live results, round 4

With Mayweather almost certainly up 3-0 through the first three rounds, Andre Berto is digging himself a hole, and he pretty badly needs this round. You can’t give away a third of a fight and beat Floyd Mayweather.

Mayweather smiling as he backs himself to the ropes and tries to bait Berto into throwing. Mayweather lands a couple, Berto gets a jab in and Floyd ties him up. Berto shoots a right, Mayweather ducks and rolls away from it, maybe caught a bit on the side of the body. Mayweather back to the middle of the ring and moving. Lead left hook again from Mayweather, a little wide and partially blocked. Berto pushes Floyd back to the ropes, Floyd ties him up again.

    Mayweather-Berto live results, Round 3

    Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Floyd Mayweather still doing his thing. Andre Berto’s really doing nothing in there. This is the worst-case scenario so far, a fight that’s incredibly easy for Mayweather and also quite dull to watch. Berto just doesn’t have the sort of tools that can trouble Mayweather. Maybe we’ll eat our words shortly, but not right now. This is child’s play for Floyd so far.

Mayweather staying in total control this round, but he does slip on the canvas at one point, which gets a rise from the crowd. That’s the most they have to really respond to at this point. Mayweather springs in with a lead left hook to the body, partially blocked. Berto just can’t get anything done at this point. This is all Mayweather in a very unexceptional manner. Berto hasn’t even talked that much trash, but he’s talked more trash than he’s landed punches, too.

    Mayweather-Berto live results, round 2

    Ezra Shaw/Getty Images

After a solid if unspectacular opening round that went Floyd Mayweather’s way, round two is underway and starting much the same as the first went. Mayweather continuing to paw with his left hand, waiting to bait Berto into getting more aggressive. Berto not really a volume puncher who takes big risks unless his opponent hurts him, though, and this might mean a real lack of action.

First half of this round is very slow, which completely favors Floyd Mayweather. Andre Berto’s only chance is to bully and overpower Mayweather, but he’s just not doing it at all, and that’s not what he does, so it’s not that surprising. Berto is having a lot of trouble doing anything effectively. He’s poking a couple jabs out, and starting to land a little to the chest. Mayweather wraps him up when Berto starts to move forward after the jab, the usual Mayweather disruption.

    Mayweather-Berto live results, Round 1

    Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Andre Berto comes out flicking a jab in the center of the ring, Floyd Mayweather springs forward with a left hook. Jab to the body from Mayweather, and then another. Berto shoots a right, it’s short, Floyd’s response in kind is blocked. Mayweather working his left hand, hook and jab, very prominently in the first minute of the fight. Another jab to the body, a signature Mayweather weapon.

Berto short on everything he flicks out thus far. Berto with a very slow start, looking pretty tight as he bounces at mid-ring. They clinch up when Mayweather gets close, Berto initiating. Mayweather kind of in the pocket, Berto not getting off, though.

Fans get money’s worth from Mayweather undercard

    Ezra Shaw/Getty Images

Maybe tonight’s Mayweather-Berto fight doesn’t excite you, but boxing fans got their money’s worth with tonight’s pay-per-view undercard, a rare enough thing these days that it should be celebrated. With two exciting world title fights, knockdowns in all four televised bouts, and a lot of grit and heart on display, Mayweather-Berto wound up being a pretty fantastic show, even if the main event is the expected dud.

This was a rematch of a terrific fight from April 4, where Martinez had home field advantage in Puerto Rico and beat Salido for the WBO super featherweight belt. This fight lived up to all expectations, with Salido relentlessly throwing punches (1,037 punches thrown over 12 rounds) and Martinez bravely eating shot after shot, to the head and body. It was a true war of attrition. Both men were down in round three, though the knockdown of Martinez was more Salido stepping on Rocky’s foot. SB Nation had this one 116-112 for Salido, with official scores of 115-113 for Salido, 115-113 for Martinez, and 114-114, a split draw. There will be a lot of demand for a rubber match after this fight, because this was a thriller.

    Mayweather stands as overwhelming favorite

    Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Floyd Mayweather has been an enormous favorite since the fight was announced, and now on fight day for his bout with Andre Berto, he remains up to a 50-to-1 (-5000) favorite from some oddsmakers, with the average from major books somewhere around 30-to-1 (-3000).

Mayweather (48-0, 26 KO) claims this will be the last fight of his career, and if so, most see Berto (30-3, 23 KO) as a borderline cupcake opponent. While Berto, 32, is a former two-time welterweight titleholder, he’s also seen as being past his best days, which never would have seen him as a serious threat to Mayweather in the first place. Berto is 3-3 in his last six bouts, but has won two in a row over Steve Upsher Chambers and Josesito Lopez.

TV schedule and fight time for Mayweather-Berto

Floyd Mayweather returns to the boxing ring tonight for what is being hyped as the last time, as the pound-for-pound king claims he’ll hang up the gloves after his bout with Andre Berto, which he is the extremely heavy favorite to win. Whether or not you believe that Mayweather, 38, will really retire, the bottom line is he’s fighting again tonight, and even in a mismatch, that’s something of an event.

Mayweather (48-0, 26 KO) will be in the ring no earlier than 11 pm EST tonight, with the full pay-per-view card beginning at 8 pm EST from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mayweather, Berto make weight for PPV showdown

    Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Floyd Mayweather and Andre Berto both looked fit and ready on the scales today for tomorrow night’s Showtime pay-per-view main event from Las Vegas, where Mayweather will supposedly fight for the final time in his 19-year professional boxing career.

Mayweather (48-0, 26 KO) tipped the scales at 146, a pound under the welterweight limit, while Berto (30-3, 23 KO) weighed in at a very lean and cut 145 pounds. Berto’s attempt to knock off the undisputed king of the sport is now being openly compared to Roberta Vinci’s stunning upset of Serena Williams at the U.S. Open.

Why nobody cares about Mayweather’s last fight

    Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

Floyd Mayweather will fight Andre Berto on Saturday night, the supposed last fight of Mayweather’s illustrious career. If you want, you can pay $50 to $75 to watch it.

Perhaps you were one of millions of chumps who paid $100 to watch Mayweather vs. Pacquiao, a fight both boxers knew would be the biggest pay-per-view fight of all time. Mayweather knew he’d win a dominant, boring fight. Pacquiao knew he was injured. And hundreds of millions of chumps still paid them a record amount of money to watch that bad fight.

Mayweather up to 50-to-1 favorite to beat Berto

    Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

Floyd Mayweather’s supposed retirement fight this coming Saturday night isn’t exactly one for the ages, at least on paper. The 38-year-old pound-for-pound boxing king is listed as high as a 50-to-1 favorite by various oddsmakers, which can be taken as both a tribute to Mayweather’s in-ring greatness, and a condemnation of his opponent, Andre Berto.

Mayweather (48-0, 26 KO) is sitting at 50-to-1 with Bovada, but to be entirely fair is between -2100 and -3000 with other major sportsbooks, which is still an enormous mismatch, but not quite so bad, at least.
